tractor accident kills 12-year-old, injures 3 other children

More children die in car accidents than from riding in tractor buckets or going on hay rides. Should we ever take our kids for a ride in a car again? Children have also been killed riding horses, bicycles, motor bikes, etc. Children have died playing many different types of sports.

I am not trying to undermine what has been said but put it in perspective. It is tragic when accidents happen, but how can we really determine what is carelessness? In many cases it boils down to personal opinion and no hard rules can be made.

I will likely get shot for this but ...... I will post it anyway.

Not going to shoot you but the risks involved in getting killed riding in a FEL bucket from falling out are exponentially higher than the others. It is quite unlikely that anyone has the reflexes to stop in time to avoid running over someone should they fall and or jump out.

We all do stupid things time and again without thinking about it. However, with all due respect, this one's a no-brainer.

Tragic. prayers go out to all. Think!

All things considered, It just isn't worth the gamble with my kids or grand-kids, well behaved or not children rely on the intelligence of an adult and at times that is risky. why temp fate?
what is there to prove? To me a tractor is a tool not a play ground set.

I am named after a cousin that died this way in 1961, so maybe I am also some what biased.

Kids get hurt all the time I agree for sure, but I bet it is a minuscule percentage that have access to a tractor and I seriously doubt that when they do, the "responsible" adult had no ill intentions.

Unnecessary tragedy...

There are some children I would give a ride in my fel bucket. There are other children I wouldn't. It isn't always the children's fault. Some parents have never taught their children how to obey and follow instruction. Some children have never been taught respect for authority (hard for parents to teach if they don't practice it themselves). When children don't have respect for parents, they will likely be students without respect for their teachers, law breakers without respect for the laws of the land, and live in such a way as to defy their Creator.

Children lack the maturity to make wise decisions so it should be left up to the parent to make the wise / adult decisions. No matter how well behaved or respectfully a child is they make mistakes as do adults. You're right, it is isn't always the child's fault sometimes it is the adult's fault who should have known better but wanted to be the fun parent /adult but at what cost? We should all try to learn from ours and others mistakes.

Would never give anyone a bucket ride. I'd be too likely to forget they were there and try to pick up a load of gravel.

Squishy.

I think this is an honest post. Some of these accidents can be caused by careless opperation by the operator. I still am not convinced hay rides, trailer rides, bucket rides, etc cannot be done safely if proper care is taken.

Bucket rides are much too dangerous, too easy to toss a person out if you hit even a small bump.

While things can be done, not all are wise to do... and not all at the same time.
Young ones in a bucket, in a lap AND pulling a wagon - all at the same time?

Even if you saw them drop out, tractors usually don't have disk brakes ....
This is just too "busy" a situation to control, some lessons are more painful than others...:(

Perhaps my mind is wired differently than others but never in my lifetime have I ever looked at a tractor and wondered where I could put kids on or in it for a ride.

It's a serious tool for getting a job done not some plaything to mess with. I've always been taught to treat my tools with the proper amount of respect otherwise bad things happen and you can have a lifetime of regret. My heart goes out to the family but I have to ask.. What were you thinking???????

Very saddening for children's lives to end tragically.
After buying my tractor I soon learned being there are no shock absorbers on a tractor, bumps/dips cause quite a jolt.... dangerous for the driver, and much more so for any passenger on an open station tractor. No one should ever be riding in/on a tractor implement, nor in the lap of the operator.

Maybe bucket rides are slower and smoother here in Canada, but I'm with Kubotaman. These activities can be done in a safe manor, under the RIGHT conditions....with well maintained equipment.
