tractor and mower attachment

Hi! With the tractor not running, can you engage the pto lever?(Might have to rotate the pto shaft slightly or turn the mower blade slightly) Then try to start the tractor. If the mower turns ok & operates,it's probably your clutch or adjustment. If the pto & mower won't turn,I'd say the mower is seized somehow.I'm no expert, just trying to help!

An 860 i use to run had two clutch peddle settings. Look under the left running board and you will see a clevis. pull the pin and set it in the hole that makes the clutch peddle the highest. This will enable you to use the second stage of the clutch for your pto. Feels weird at first but you will get use to is......For all other non pto work we use the hole in the clevis that allows the clutch peddle to be set lower.

I want to thank you for your suggestion. I am uncomfortable giving out that
kind of information, that is where my locality is.

There were some suggestion for checking the clutch adjustments. Although
I think I can follow instructions, it would be nice to have a photo or
sketch of where this little screw is postioned on my tractor.

I attempted this afternoon once again to see if it would work and it failed
once again.

I first checked the pto all my itself. It engages with no problems when
nothing is attached.

As soon as I attached the brush hog to the pto it would not engage, just
the sound of grinding gears.

then I thought I would turn off the tractor then engage the pto. The
tractor would not start with the drag of the brush hog attached.
Although the pto was spinning the blades slowly. So I did not want to
drain the battery and gave up and parked the tractor back in the barn.

It appears the most of you gentelmen are in agreement that the pto needs
replacing.

I guess it will just have to wait a bit longer before I send if off to the
repair shop.

You fellas are amazing, and I appreciate your help.

re: tractor and brush hog attachments

Is your tractor a ford? On the front of my tractor on the hood is the number 800

I will check tomorrow under the left running board and see if a clevis is there. My intuition
is telling me I bet it won't be there.

Thanks for the tip sir

not replacing.. merely UN-STUCK / disengaged.. etc., unless the clutch is past it's service life, in which case it needs replacing. the fact htat it will engage when not under a load is beacuse the small pto shaft will simply just kick into gear and spin with little effort.. witht he mower on there, that's alot of inertia to spin up.

actually.. I'd block the cliutch down for a couple days, and leave the pto engaged, and then bump the starter over.. say 10 times.. if the pto section is merely stuck, it may pop free. if it is just out of adjustment due to wear on the main plate.. then it will need mechanical intervention in t he way of parts..

In answer to your question. Rarely will the pto engage while the tractor is running. The
clutch or whatever it is called that engages the pto to operate just grinds away.

The only time it works when nothing is attached at all.
