Buying Advice Tractor buying advice for 39 acres

A quite capable 3720 will be $10,000 cheaper than a 4320 also. Maybe I shouldn't assume, but I am assuming a 4320 sucks more fuel than a 3720.
If you like both tractors and if a majority of the job would be mostly mowing and light ground engaging work a few day out of the year, and the 3720 does that easily, does it make sense to get the bigger more expensive, less efficient one? Maybe for bragging rights.

I'm not sure that that's how fuel economy functions in these machines. If both tractors are running the same mower in the same field, they should do it on almost the same amount of fuel. The only difference should be the extra fuel needed to move the heavier tractor. Otherwise, the larger motor will only use as much fuel as needed to do the job, just like the smaller one.

Depreciation of other brands vs JD tractors.

The depreciation post above was in response to murphy1244. Needed to explain that, I don't post on forums much as you can tell. The tractor that is at my dealer is a 3046r. That is the replacement for the 3720. Buying a new model might be a financial risk. I would not think so from JD, but you never know. The 3046r is so new I can't find any reviews from owners about it. They also have a 4320 on the lot. Thanks everyone for the posts. It has helped.

Forget depreciation. Whatever myths or anyone tells you, it just aint true. They are all expensive new. Some moreso than others.

And they are ALL expensive used.

I have a kubota that I paid ~17k for about 8 years ago. Probably worth about 12k now with ~600 hours on the clock. So about 30% less for 8 years and 600 hours.

A comparable deere @ 22k with the same use would likely be worth the same 30% less. or about 15.5k

Same goes for other brands. And unless you plan on selling the tractor in the next 3-5 years, why are you even considering depreciation? But I am not here to try to change your mind on that. Some people just have their mind made up as to what they want and can only see one color. You are only hurting yourself.

As to tractor choice, If I owned 40 acres and 30 of it was pasture, I would be looking bigger than either of the two you mentioned. I'd be looking 5055e. And I would also be looking to upgrade to a 8 or 10' cutter too for 30 acres.

Thanks LD1 for your post. Appreciate any education on used tractor prices I can get. There is a chance that the Kubota L4600 is well in the running here. I have not sat down with the salesman yet. That is when the hard reality sets in, and sometimes everything changes.

Look at the MX5100 too. Little bit more tractor, not much more money.

Not sure if I missed it, but as far as features go, what are you looking for? HST or gear? Cab or not? Extra bells and whistles? or just a basic tractor?

Wanting a cab and HST will rule out quite a few models from different MFG's.

Looking at a 4600 kubota vs a 3720/4320 from deere isnt exactaly apples to apples. The deere's are more of a delux model with lots of extra features. The L4600 is an economy line with fewer features to get the price point down. more like the 3038 and 4105 deeres.

I think it is solid logic to stay away from the new 3046R in an effort to avoid the Diesel Particulate Filter. Some day you won't have a choice, but now we do with last years models still available.

LD1, Was needing hst with loader but not so big as to rule out dumping mulch around the house. Traded a 1970 Ford 5000 a few years ago for a NH TC35A. But do to health reasons I need a hst not a shift model now, so I am just seeing how much I can get before re-evaluating. Cab would be ok, take it or leave it.
The JD tractors I have been talking about have cabs. I really like the ease of removing JD loaders and that is weighing heavy on my choice.

Arlen4720 brings up a good point about the new 3046r with the diesel particulate filter. That may rule it out.

Pretty much everybody's FEL comes off similarly now....they're all easy to remove.
