Tractor Choices and Money

I started out looking at a MX5200 and now looking at the M7060 12 speed. Its amazing how just $1500 more at every step will get you little better tractor. Now I am going to be spending 9k more to get what I think is the best all around tractor or at least the dealer says it is. has anyone regretted getting to big of a tractor?

You will find that some people regret going too big. Probably more that regret going too small. It all depends on what you are using it for. I’m kind of in between myself. I’m always impressed with my BX25D-1 can do, but there have been a few times that I wish I had more lifting power (but that is admittedly rare). But while mowing, I’m very pleased with the maneuverability of my BX. I’m also not sure I’d be happy with a larger tractor taking up more room in my shop/garage).

I definitely do not regret getting the backhoe. Something that is often discouraged by those without one, but rarely regretted by those that actually own them.

It all depends how you plan to use your machine... If you have the storage space for a larger machine, I don’t think you will regret going bigger (well, as long as it’s not a financially terrible idea).

When I replaced my L4630, I had initially intended to get a used L5740 which is a similar sized frame with more HP, but could not find any.
Then I happened across the M6040 and was surprised at how much larger all around it is.
I was initially concerned about the size, but once I began using it I realized that it actually is a more nimble and maneuverable machine than the L.
Both are cabbed tractors so they have the same liabilities in the woods although the M is roomier.
Bigger is better in my book.

I had a 42 pto large frame 70s tractor. Sold it and bought a large frame 6200 JD. Then needed a smaller tractor, so bought a JD 770 in addition to the 6200. Then got a dedicated 60HP grass cutting machine and got rid of the 770. Got a Steiner as well. BUT, all along missed that 42HP size of tractor, and am "thinking" about getting a Kubota M series, about the same physical size. Not just a toy, but capable traction and ground clearance.

big tractor is great unless you work in the woods or ever have to move it from your land

There are wayyyyy more people trading in tractors on larger one's vs. trading on smaller ones. Myself included, several times. If you only have one tractor, I'd recommend getting at least one size up from what you think you need today.

Looked at a Bobcat CT122 and thought it would be fine, couldn't come to an agreement on price and then later found a CT225 and bought it. I am sure glad I got the bigger tractor.

An old woodsman and all round mans man, friend of my Dad once told him something I will never forget. When you go to the bush, you take the biggest machine you have. I would not even think of taking my little Steiner. Might as well take one of those kids Gators.
