Can't argue with that.

That's one of the main reasons I'm a ford guy. the local JD and Kubota dealers are only for 'rich' people as their hp cost about 1.25 X as much as blue or red hp.

Our local massey F dealer has slightly better prices than blue.. but is a scheister... I feel like i can't bend over in his parking lot without something uh.. bad happening to me. The only other dealer we had was blue.. and was a ford dealer 'back then' and is now a CNH dealer. He's done me right over the years on service and sales price, so I keep giving him my business even though I could save a few bucks down the road at red.. or way up the roada hundred miles at another blue dealer.

45+ years of fooling with my own tractors has taught me a few lessons. One is to stick with a dealer who shoots straight.

Soundguy, I bought my 5400 used but in really nice shape and I'll bet I've got alot less in it than most do in 1/2 the power. Granted if I bought brandy new it would have been another story. But its the age old tractor thing, the bigger they are the less they cost dollar/hp. Everbody wants a little tiny cute tractor thats easy to haul around so market demand sets the price. My local Cadet dealer sells sub compact trators with Kawasaki engines in them and a loader (basically large garden tractors) for more than I paid for this real farm tractor. Of coarse it won't fit in your typical attached garage either.

Personally.. I'd rathere have the biggest tractor that was still capable of doing my smallest job.. or moe preferably.. the biggest tractor i needed / wanted for my big jobs.. then an intermediate tractor for the little stuff.

I think I got real lucky. When I found this 5400 my only real criteria was over 50HP and a loader capable of at least 2000lbs. lift. Any brand was in the mix. I was close to a Ford 4600 when this 5400 came into the dealer. Since I've owned it (for me) its the perfect balance of power/size/weight. Its small enough to still go to the woods, heavy enough to do some real work, and powerful enough to handle most jobs with ease. It would still be a toy to most farmers today but compared to what I was using this was a pretty big step up. If I had it to buy all over again I wouldn't want anything less than this. I was actually thinkin about an Allis in the 85-90HP range but this JD seems to have all the poop necessary. Even on the road with a heavy trailer behind going up a hill in road gear it loafs along with power to spare. Maybe its the turbo but this little Deere will run.
