Tractor deaccelerates

I have a Kubota BX2350 with a belly mower that we mainly use for mowing our 15 acre property. We mow about 5 acres each week. I bought it used with about 500 hours on it. No problems until now. You mow for about 1/2 hour and then the problem starts. It deaccelerates until it will eventually die out. However, if you stop mower, it will crank back up and resume running smoothly. I have changed the fuel and oil filters. I had one of the seat sensors checked and the local Kubota dealer said it was fine. The gas cap got lost at one point in time. We ordered a new one but in the mean time we have a rag with a rubber band. I blew air into one of gas hoses thinking some dirt might have gotten stuck and running under load caused the problem but that did not do anything. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Get a flashlight and a long rod of some sort ..... have a look (and a poke around) in there ...... might be something in there that periodically slides over the outlet ....

You most likely have "crap in the tankitus" and the best way to remedy it is remove the tank and clean the tank as the screen is repeatedly being plugged by the suction created by the fuel pump to deliver fuel to the injectors.

The screen in the tank is your lifeline and its doint its job.


It does not take much junk to create issues like this for any diesel or gas tractor.

From this description, doesn't sound "fuel related". Sounds "load related".

i.e. when you disengage the mower (PTO), the tractor runs ok (rpm back to set speed). Is that correct?

If so, will engaging the mower let you run for another 1/2 hour before it loses engine rpm's again?

Or...will engaging the mower soon after the engine rpm comes up to set, cause immediate loss of rpm's ?

Will fuel drain from the tank fast thru the hose that goes to the fuel filter? As said, the tank outlet may have a piece of debris down by it. Mine had a mystery problem just like this .. intermittent good fuel flow from the tank. I siphoned it, took out the fuel fitting, flushed some fuel thru. I didnt see anything come out, but the problem went away. Magical fixes are so unsatisfying.

There is no doubt it takes more fuel to run the mower under load than to run the engine with no load, so if it were getting insufficient fuel it might restart and run perfectly with no load. Important question is whether it will immediately MOW another 1/2 hour after restart. The consistent time interval between stalls seems strange too.

What happens if you raise the mower, leave the PTO engaged and go to neutral as the engine starts bogging down? Will it recover and continue mowing? Do you normally decrease your forward movement when the engine starts bogging down?

There a host of things it might be, so you have to use process of elimination to find the problem. I still think there is a possibility when the fuel cap was lost that trash could have gotten into the tank. Personally, I would eliminate that first as was suggested by rswyan. I would also look at the fuel filter when it quits and see if it has fuel in it.
