Tragic story, but I am sure he would not have wanted to go out any other way. He was doing what he loved. I can only hope that I too pass doing something I love like that.:(

A catastrophic loss for his family and friends. I've seen the fragility of life. His sacrifice may make a lot of us a little more careful out there. My positive thoughts for him and his family. Jay

This really is sad and I can't help but wonder what happened. How could a tractor flip on top of him?

But then I remembered something. About 5 years ago, my BIL helped me pull some spruce stumps. Of course, ya have to take a running start and it was kinda funny when the tractor would pop a wheelie when the stump didn't budge. (Not at all funny now that I'm thinking about it).

The cable was attached to the drawbar which was below the plane of the rear axle. I can only imagine what might have happened if cable was connected at the top link instead...would it have flipped over backwards?

Eventually the cable snaped (a completely different safety issue altogether).

Does anybody know what happened? The story doesn't really say...

I'm watching the local papers and if I find out anything more I'll post it here.

A similar incident happened around here last summer. A man was found dead in his front yard with a small tractor on top of him. He apparantly was using it to pull a truck up some ramps to work on it. Like this incident, he most likely hooked up his chain above the level of the rear axle. When that clutch is let out, normally the rear wheels turn. If their is enough available traction and the pulled load is heavy enough, AND the chain is hooked high enough, the rear tires don't turn and instead the entire tractor rotates around the axis of it's rear axle and flips over. It happens so quickly that there is no time to react. When I pull I try to pull in reverse. When I can't do that I run my chain under the box scraper and hook it to the drawbar. A heavy implement on the back I think you act like a "wheelie bar" and help keep the machine from flipping over backwards.

After my close call I had tears when I read this one, so sad. I printed the report in the paper off and let my duathers boy freind read it. He wants to farm and is 18. Prayers to the family.
