I have been looking at the rear tires on this tractor.....they seem much wider than the ones I have been seeing on local 1401d.....did the american models have bigger tires? was this an option? Seem to remember some where out there was a thread that told you what was different between the grey market and made for america market yanmars?? Please share what you know about the differences between the two. I know the rops was only on the american made models (mine has been cut and welded to fold down- will need to get this welded back the way it was)....do I still need to buy the limit clutch on this model?

Just from what I have been able to gather the YM187 is a longer version of the YM186. The YM187 has column mounted shifter and ROPS, the YM186 has floor mounted shifter and no ROPS.

The YM186 is the domestic version of the YM1510. From what pictures I have on the YM186 it does have appear to have larger tires than what my YM1510D has. The YM186 also has an external air cleaner as opposed to the YM1510 being under the hood. The YM186 has a thermostat, the 1510 doesn't.

Guys....call me crazy but I am buying this with only a few pics and the dealers word. The tractor is a one owner....traded in at a JD dealer. Hours are 521....comes with a bush hog QT1846 fel. Owners manuals etc. Paid $4200 for it plus shipping. Found a guy who will deliver it to my door for $550. 450 miles....figured it was going to cost me $450 and two days driving to get it....seemed like a win win for me and him. Will try to attach pics...
you better be sure its not one of those grey market type tractors that are made for the asian market, worn out then repainted slicked up and imported to the good ole USA where unsuspecting guys think its a good deal and the dealer tells em a sweet story just to sell it, cause if it is we will be hearing from you again.

You may be right....but I hope not!.... the package he is sending me has the original bill of sale when the gentleman originally bought it many years ago. The dealer knew the guy who sold the owner the tractor.... Also if you look close on the tractor the hand rail paint is worn almost completely down to the primer....as in all deals...there are some possibilities for things to go wrong.....I am sure this one will need some work of some sort....The JD dealer has multiple sites....I would think they would not want to ruin their reputation on an off brand tractor they sold......maybe I am too simple minded.......but I have missed several opportunties in the last couple of weeks.....each time I decided God must not have wanted me to have that particular one........with the find....now I know why I missed the others....I believe he had this one waiting for me! Once I get it home I will give my report...again I am sure there will be things to repair or update...part of owning old stuff!! :) :D

Coupla comments. Since I displayed my ignorance re YM1500 a couple of days ago, take this FWIW. :D

I have a YM186D that has column shift. The parts manual shows that change about halfway through the years these were produced. (81-86??) And I thought I read somewhere that YM187 was sold alongside YM186 for a year or so before YM186 production ended.

Aaron just posted yesterday a chart showing both 16" and 20" rear wheels were available on YM187.

The American Yanmars aren't 'off brand'. This tractor may have been sold new by that same Deere dealer. My local dealer sold them new, as a second line, and still has his Yanmar Authorized Parts sign out front as well as his Yanmar listing in the Yellow Pages. (But I have to add that his parts manager isn't really on board. I got a 'Yanmar who???' reaction in 2003 when I inquired if they could support my Yanmar. He must think Yanmar Parts refers to the small Deeres built by Yanmar.)

And finally, I want one! The YM186 operator space is simply cramped, and I'm no bigger than a Japanese farmer. As I understand it, YM187 is equivalent to the final update of YM186 with a few extra inches added to the transmission tunnel, (to make it longer for a belly mower) and I hope they added a few inches to the floorboards also.

"Thanks for the response California. I was hoping you would jump in....you always seem to have a good bit of information not readily found by us newbies.
I was told it was an 1988....supposedly the owner still had the original bill of sale with the paperwork....will be interesting to see what it sold for then....I am figuring around $5000- $6000....anybody know for sure?? Dealer said it had a "block warmer"......down in eastern north carolina....not too many really cold days....so don't know how much I will need that. Just hope it is in as good of shape as it looks.

Personally I don't see a thing wrong with the grey market units. I bought one 7 years ago and all I have had to do for it was, replace battery after 1st year, rebuilt starter, new core in radiator, and keep oil changed.

I bought a Yanmar excavator in Iowa and contacted Uship and got some very good bids on bringing it back to Ohio. Prompt and professional. If they include it with another load you can sometimes get a real good deal.

Why would you not want the ROPS to fold down:confused:?
