I have a '99 Dodge with the Cummins engine which has 2 batteries. The battery on the drivers side is connected to the other side with long cables routed around the front of the engine compartment. I recently had to replace both batteries and today glanced under the hood and saw the positive cable on the drivers side was real high on the post. The bolt for the clamp is actually a stud with nuts on each end so I got a 1/2" wrench to tighten it since most battery bolts are 5/16 and a 1/2" fits the nuts. Well on the end where the connecting cable attaches it fit and was tight, the other end had a smaller nut which turned out to be 12mm and was loose so I tapped the cable clamp onto the post where it belongs and tightened it.

I bought this truck new and am certain that nothing has been changed since new but it's been so long since I changed batteries I don't remember this from the last time. I had the guy I bought the batteries from change them this time but it's obvious he didn't replace this stud but just didn't tighten the 12mm nut. It's a crazy deal but that's the world we live in now.

Caterpillar equipment has been ISO metric for several decades. They supply to the US military which has been metric for just as long. So a Cat dealer is always a source for metric fasteners and Caterpillar has a dealer in the islands. Same with Deere as their in house build is metric and I assume due to Hawaii’s agriculture they have a Deere presence. Free shipping to Hawaii? I always see the free shipping disclaimer (except Alaska and Hawaii). That’s gotta suck.

Maybe things have changed?

I was an assembler for Deere for about 10 years a few decades ago. Everything was American Standard.

....just look at the resistance (in this country) to the superior metric system.

I wanted to say something like that. Couldn't figure how to word it. You did great.

Why don't the world get together and standardise a simple thing like threading of nuts and bolts!!!
Anyone know which 'standard' they used on the 1980's Ford compact tractors made in Japan?
Also, why don't we all drive on the same side of the road??
I'll just leave this here... standards.jpg
