When you take the cap off you will be able to tell if it is plastic or steel. Tank removal is usually not very complicated. Regardless of whether it is plastic or steel it will probably have to come off for repair or replacement. If it is the tank leaking try to determine what caused the problem. Was it bumped, stressed, etc. Is everything is place to secure the tank such as rubber mounts, all the fasteners etc. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
