Re: Tractor Lust...VS...I Don\'t Need More...

Bill our issue is not with the tractor, we are satisfied there. Our problem is that we lust after additional gadgets and attachments.

Heated cabs for the winter, grapples yeah we gotta have grapples. Then there's power rakes, and snowplows, and, and , and. Well you know what I mean.

Sometimes I think the folks that sell us these tractors might be compared to drug dealers. They get us hooked with the tractor first and then we keep coming back for everything else that follows, and follows. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Tractor Lust...VS...I Don\'t Need More...

I think I did just fine ... my TC45 has done everything I wanted it to do ... one of the reasons I went with the 45 rather than a TN55 or 65 was the location of the fuel tank. The bigger tractors had their tanks under the deck where I would have punctured them continuosly in my heavy brush. The 45 now has one other thing that a new one wouldn't have and is a big deal ...... a release of lien! My wife keeps talking about buying a BH for it .... I actually talk against it ...$$$$$$ .... for the same money I can get lots more attachments...better to get more fixes than 1 big overdose. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: Tractor Lust...VS...I Don\'t Need More...

We have 20 acres here and 125 in MS that's a 165 mile pull away. I usually make that trip once a year and do some brush cutting and work over some roads on the place over about a two week period. One of my primary concerns was to keep the weight of the tractor and implements to be hauled about 6500-7000 lbs and avoid the requirement to upgrade the truck and trailer.
The first tractor was a TN65 2wd, and it fit my needs pretty well for a couple of years and then I realized a need for a FEL. The MF setup that I have now has given me no reason to complain. The size seems adequate to do whatever I've needed and it hauls pretty well.
I do have plans to trade for a similar HP tractor with cab in about three years. It's not really justifiable, but will be much more comfortable in the summer here. When I make that move I'll probably move to a one ton truck and heavier trailer too, and my weight considerations won't make the tractor search so limited.
I think the "lusts" have pretty well been attained; seems like I was buying a new toy every month or six weeks for a while. A used disk that I never use since I bought the Howse RT70 tiller. NH sicklebar mower that I use 2-3 times a year to cut ditchbanks. A couple of 200gl aluminum spray tanks, one ended up as a fuel tank and the other is set up on a 3ph frame waiting my completing a spray/fogger rig. The 4X8 3ph carryall platform that I used constantly with the NH TN65 is hardly ever used since I've got the FEL. Three-row disk bedder that I rigged up this year is GREAT for laying off garden rows. Herd seeder that I've cleaned up to working condition but haven't used, but the price was right! The pallet forks were probably the best money spent since I got the tractor.
I just can't think of anything to lust after right now.
But, if I could find a small utility tractor w/cab in a couple of years with adjustable wheel spacing and suitable for row-cropping I might develop a need for planters/fertilizer distributors and cultivators. Too bad that they don't make small tractors with wheel spacing capacities similar to the old row-crop tractors like the SuperC, etc. OR DO THEY?

Re: Tractor Lust...VS...I Don\'t Need More...

I am equating my soon to be first tractor with an initial dose of antibiotic - large/expensive. I only have 6 acres to tend to yet I am thinking CK30HST. Too much? Yup... but what a toy. No matter what I do though, I can't beat my neighbor, he's got a JD5525 and a big loader/backhoe by Case (don't know what model). All that just for playing around in his fishing camp. BTW he loves his toy so much that he stays at the camp most of the time. His wife has to come out from the city and visits him twice a week from their mansion in town.

Yes. I am still in the big lust phase. The diesel fume must contains pheromone or some thing.

Re: Tractor Lust...VS...I Don\'t Need More...

Logically, my B2400 is the ideal tractor for my needs ... not too big for the 4+ acre yard and just big enough for the 8+ acre pasture but hey, what has logic got to do with this. Yes, every 3 or 4 months I go through the "lust" phase for a bigger tractor. I can play with bigger tractors at the farm but I "need" one at the house.

For the first 3 years after moving into the house I used a JD 318 to tend the yard and paid someone to cut the pasture. That seemed a little like paying someone to have fun for you so I convinced the CFO that I really needed a CUT, "Come on honey, for what I pay to have the pasture cut, the pay back period on a CUT would only be 35 - 40 years!!!!!". I still don't know why that worked. I think if I'd had my druthers about me at the time I should have held out for a diesel front mounted mower and a larger tractor, about 38 - 40 hp. It doesn't make sense really because I have access to a 38 hp JD, a 57 hp Kubota and a 75 hp MF tractors at the farm. All I have to do is trailer them about 8 miles to the house. As I said before this has nothing to do with logic, it is all pure LUST.

I don't expect anything to change in the immediate future but that doesn't stop me calling in by the dealers and an ol' boy who specializes in used tractors every couple of months. One of these days I'm going to run in to a deal that I just can't refuse. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Re: Tractor Lust...VS...I Don\'t Need More...

Well, right now I have tractor lust for the little orange beauty profil'n in the ole shop! It's only got a wopp'm 12 hrs on it! Seems it's been raining every minute of every non-evening/weekend hour around these parts for an eternity.....
So what was the question?
Oh yeah, I've got alittle over 4 acres of which I finish mow about 2.5 of. I let a neighbor cut the remaining for hay. And if he didn't I'd finish mow it also!

The BX23 seems custom made for what I intend to use it for which is to finish mow 1st, keep a small pond dug out, keep the heavily wooded fence rows cleaned up, distribute mulch & compost where needed and dig and move dirt where needed.

I recently sold a fairly new JDL130 which did an excellent job of finish mowing so the BX23 will become the primary finish mower and hopefully that little SubCUT won't be too big for that task.

My gardening has slowed down to the point where being able to work a double bottom plow wasn't a necessity for a new tractor purchase but had it been, a larger rear tired compact tractor like the B7510/B7610 would have been the ticket.

I've also recently sold my ole TE20 along with most of it's implements so I do miss having a large rear wheeled tractor around, if not just for rideing so on down the road I just may buy me another old workhorse needing some TLC.
So yeah, I guess I'll always have tractor lust but I am very happy with the BX23 I've just recently purchased.

Volfandt
P.S. I've also got utility trailer lust going on too. My 5x8 is now ueless if'n I want to transport the BX23 so it's for sale and I'm looking at going with either a 6x12 single axle, 6x14 dual axle w/brakes or a car hauler. When one does a radical change to ones tractor inventory, it's like the proverbial snowball rolling down hill on the add-ons, extras and need to haves! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Tractor Lust...VS...I Don\'t Need More...

Eternally in the lust stage here ... for a Cat, track dozer. As I have virtually no use for it, my slobbering lust would be for a cable rig. This isn't a recent thing. I grew up with the occasional story of my dad working for a Cat dealer in Golita, CA just out of high school. An area where they did/do sidehill farming. The locals ordered the Cats with the fuel tank on the side. The tank side was always on the uphill side and the man sat on the tank. I'm sure you can figger out why. And, how the owner, a giant of a man, drove track pins out with a 16# hammer and a bullprick (i.e., gad, punch, drift) ... you know who was holding the bullprick ... nope, he never missed. Enough of old stories. To make matters worse, I have an original bound copy of Alexander Botts' Earthworms Through The Ages. Originally a boys series of books but truely a "tractor man's" guide to impossible tasks.
BX23; 5 acres, rolling, gumbo clay, slightly wooded, stream that needs cleaning. I'm sure the baby tractor will be just fine as soon as the mud turns back into dirt /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Cheers!
