I'm curious as to the source of this information - the math doesn't add up

pop of US 296M (million)
% under 18 - 25% = 74M, 50% boys, 50% girls = 37M each
1 in 5 girls = 7.4M, 1 in 6 boys = 6.1M total = 13.5M
even if every one of the 400,000 victims is under 18, total = 7.2M

Compare this to 650,000 registered offenders means we aren't catching many:mad:

I'm sure that these stats come from different "studies" - you'd think that the agency reporting them would do a sanity check.

I don't mean to diminish the threat, but often activists inflate the numbers to further their cause.

A quick google search turned up an article that claimed 1 in 3 girls before 12 and 1 in 7 boys of course no reference to the study.

sorry those stats are directly copy and pasted from the link I listed earlier in this thread. I am sure they are exaggerated some and who knows the validity of them in general but what ever the truth is anything over 0 is not acceptable to me.

I absolutely agree, that would be a perfect world, and the last time I looked its far from perfect !

Sexual predators of any kind are largely "uncurable", at least at this time. You aren't going to change what turns a person on. But, everyone needs to know what their kids are doing on the internet. I don't think I'd let my kids have computers in their room. I teach high school and a lot of my students are mad that their parents made them pull their myspace profiles, and I just said, "I would, too." Teens, especially young ones, are sexually curious and can very easily get involved in online conversations thinking the person they are talking to is far away and can't hurt them. They are vulnerable to believing what the person they are chatting with tells them. They think they haven't given out enough personal information for someone to find them. But, while they may not give out their last name or address, they give clues like their first name, what school they go to, what sports teams they are on. They will post a message on myspace saying something like "I went to McDonalds" which can give a predator who has been chatting with them enough information to find them that afternoon. The world has changed a lot and you just can't be too careful.

I agree, but a little lead posioning can sure turn them off.

That would be fine with me, but I suspect the civil liberties groups would have a problem with it.

Your right there Roxy. I wonder why the civil liberties groups are never looking out for the victims rights?

Some people just have a warped sense of values, I guess. I, personally, am pretty tired of hearing about criminals' rights. I know some of these people can't help it that they commit the crimes they do (mental illness), but I can't feel sorry for them. If they can't live among civilized society without committing crimes against others, they need to be locked up, plain and simple. I'm also tired of people who blame their behavior on everyone but themselves. I don't want to hear, "It's my dad's or mom's fault for beating me/being a drunk/molesting me." Yes, of course, it is terrible that any of those things may have happened to you, but other people have experienced that stuff too and either rose above it on their own or got the help they needed to be responsible for themselves. Sorry if I'm rambling here but I had to listen to someone last night that is a broken record about how if his father hadn't died when he was a kid, his life would be great right now. This event (according to him) is responsible for his not getting an education (even though it would have been free on Social Security), his divorce, his incapability of holding a job and his inability to find a new wife.
