New Holland TC45D
My New Holland TC45D tractor died when I dismounted without taking it out of gear. I did, however, engage the brake. When I got back on it and took it out of gear, it wouldn't start. I've had issues with this before and have been able to shift the lever in and out of gear and then it starts. That didn't work this time. Would this be a neutral safety switch issue that bspeedy cautioned about in another thread? If so, is this something I can easily purchase and replace? If not, any suggestions?

Just realized I posted this in the wrong forum. Please forgive my mistake.

There is a fuse that likes to blow on the smaller boomers (like my tc33da) that will prevent it from starting. Not sure if the 45's have the same problem, but you might want to check for a blown fuse.

Yes, the PTO was not off. I had unknowingly bumped it when shifting in and out of gear to get the tractor started. Not too alert on my part. Although I did get it started this time, I do still have the problem of the tractor, at times, not recognizing that the tractor is out of gear until I move the lever back into gear and out again (maybe several times). This, however, this isn't the correct section to be discussing it. Thanks for the responses.

The gear neutral switch is trivial to replace. Mine failed, and I bypassed it(also trivial).

Messicks will deliver it to your door, and the website is easy.

Thanks, dynasim. I'll check that out.

Replace the switch, DO NOT bypass it. Way too many people do this only to find, as many have here on TBN, when its needed and bypassed they get run over by their own tractor or worse.
OP, click the black triangle at bottom of any of your posts and ask the admin to move you to the other NH forum.

Was going to order the part on Messick's website. The price listed was $50.72. When I proceeded to checkout, the price was $73.80. I called to question the discrepancy and was told it was a price update and said it wasn't them--it was New Holland. I called the local Central New Holland for a price quote and was given a price of $39.20. He called it a range selector safety switch as opposed to Messick's range selector jump out, but I think it was the same thing. He also said to check to make sure the nut isn't loose at the transmission. That is a problem they have had before. I'll check that, although I don't think that it is just from looking at it. But I'll put a wrench on it and see. If I go to Central New Holland, I'll take the part with me to make sure I'm getting what I need. He did ask if I had gears or hydrostatic, so I guess they take different parts. The tractor is running, so I have time to get the right part at the best price. I just need to get it fixed before it gets much worse. Thanks for the help -- especially directing me to the website and the part.
