tractor parts cleaning

One thing to be cautious about when using some of the listed items as parts cleaner is that they have rather low flash points and can pose a serious fire hazard if not used with care. True parts washer fluids generally have higher flash points to increase their safety. Just something to keep in mind. I don't want to see someone go up in flames while cleaning their tractor parts.

I hope it's not a Falstaff sign as a good friend of mine would be crying in his beer if it was.

No, if it was Falstaff, it would be hanging!

It's Amstel Light. It deserved to be cut in half..... After all, it's 1/2 the calories, right?

That goes for any light beer sign! Light beer is to beer as fast food is to real food...a disgrace.

So back to parts cleaning (even though beer is a better topic)... I'm new to all this tractor work but have saved a bundle in the last couple weeks.

I've taken off the control valve cover with control valve assembly attached. A NH service tech said (sight unseen) to soak it in a 'solvent,' blow it out with air, and soak it again.

It appears that over the years the gasket failed allowing water to drip on the top of the assembly causing sort of a carmelized rust layer.

What solvent do you recommend to soak this part in?

Will your solvent damage any of the o-rings inside (I don't plan to take the assembly apart)?

How about automatic transmission fluid-ATF. Been known to do wonders.

Are you sure that's a gunky deposit and not rust. Kind of looks like rust from here. A gasket scraper and wire brush might be the easiest route.

I do the old diesel and rag thing myself. When it comes down to painting, a specific paint degreaser/cleaner is used on a rag, air blown and cleaned again. Been a pretty good system so far. On exposed parts that don't get paint, the diesel film is a slight rust inhibitor. But if you need to use a thread locker, use brake cleaner first to get the oil off.

As far as the beer (Sorry for pulling this thread even further off topic!!), about 15 years ago I found an unopened can of Falstaff beer. What makes it special is that it is a bicentenial edition, so its covered stars and stripes. Its the center peice of our liquior cabinet!
