Tractor power steering trouble

Hi folks,

I've been slowly restoring an IH 350 Utility. Next on the list is the power steering/hydraulics.

At some point the previous owner added the power steering from an IH combine that was being parted out.

What I have now is a mess of hoses and tubes, but basically they tapped into the tractor hydraulics, ran it through a pressure regulator, then a tee that feeds the power steering and the tractor hydraulic system.

The problem: When it is running every 10-15 seconds the steering system locks up, the engine lugs down as pressure builds somewhere in the system, and then it goes back to normal. During this time all hydraulic function is lost, fasthitch won't raise or lower, steering wheel won't turn. I've not hooked up the loader, but don't think that would change anything.

I can get some pictures of how this was put together if that will help. It is going to be redone to at least fix the leaks and make the hose routing look better.

Options I'm considering:

1. Fix what is there, figure out how to tie the power steering into the tractor hydraulics properly.

2. Put the tractor hydraulics back to stock and add a separate pump and system just for the power steering, belt driven off the front of the engine.

It is possible that there is something wrong with the power steering parts and the tie in was connected properly.

Any thoughts? Ideas?

I would say that the power steering needs it's own hyd circuit, as the steering is a safety thing.

You can use a splitter to give the PS circuit it's own supply and the tractor hyd can be separate.

You can also add a PS pump and drive the steering .

Can you describe the flow path you have now?
