Hey Audrey. See you already have your profile updated. I think you made a great decision on the H. Belt hp goes back to when tractors all had belt pulleys but no PTO. AFter PTOs came out, belt driven equipment was gradually phased out. Now everyone has a PTO and no belt pulley. The H comes from the era when both were common and rating standards were still based on belt hp. For all practical purposes belt hp = pto hp. Drawbar hp has always been a measure of work done pulling a load from the drawbar and is less than pto/belt hp due to additional friction and tire slippage losses.
Enjoy,
Fred

Ok, so both are listed because the H was first produced before PTOs (1939)? Some tractors have a PTO and some of the older models don't. I think it may even have been an option in the earlier years, the PTO that is. Thanks for that info.

Maybe someone can answer another question. The choke rod must have been replaced at some point with a cable because it has a cable on it. The cable is nonfunctioning due to rust. That leaves me having to use the choke by standing next to the tractor, which is not the safest way to start it. I'm very careful about making sure it's not in gear, but I sure don't want to get run over by this tractor, so I'd like to fix that problem. Should I replace or try to fix the cable or should I get another rod? It looks like I could come up with a rod for $10-$15 on ebay. Since I may restore it in a few years, maybe I should get the rod?

Mornin Roxy,
Hands down, replace the choke rod ! Its cheap and when you want to restore the tractor, its right to begin with ! IMHO :)

either just buy a salvage replacement.. or simply make one.

When i bought my allis chalmers 'G', it had no choke or starter rods. On the G, the choke rod comes up from the carb thru the left fender, and the starter rod thru the right fender. Just grab eac and pull. Mine were gone.. along with fenders. I used some metal dowel rod and made them in about 10 minutes. Salvage rods were scarcer than diamond studded hen's teeth.

I did stop in at the local Case/IH dealer today to make their acquaintance and find out if they could get parts in a reasonable amount of time. They kept trying to talk me into trading in my Yanmar for a new Kubota though! They did offer to look for a used 3ph snowblower for me. The salesman was getting pretty annoying on the Kubota issue so I told him all my implements are red too, and he couldn't expect a woman to put clashing implements on an orange tractor;).
