Tractor Recommendations 41 acres of bottom land?

It says on Kubotas website it will run up to a 7 foot mower, a finish mower i think tho. It will run a 6 foot brush mower i know for sure because my companies L35 runs a 6 footer with no problem and its only 35hp and same pto speed.

If the land is cropland, why don't you rent it or lease it out to a farmer. Then just get a smaller tractor to maintain the remaining property.

Thanks for the links. I checked them all out, but did not find anything to meet my needs that I can afford. Right now my budget for a tractor is about $6,000. I have talked to someone who farmed that area and he told me that I don't need a 4WD because "you don't mow when it is too wet to go out there", but I want to be able to go out there on a tractor when it is probably too wet to go out on a 2WD.

I found a Kubota M4950DT 49HP 4WD with a FEL and box blade that is going up for auction (see attached picture). It has 4076 hours on it. The farmer who I talked to will be at the auction and has been many times before. He guesses that it will go for anywhere from $3,000 to $10,000, but said that he would not bid more than $4,500 if he was interested in it. I am supposed to give it a test run and inspection early this evening. The auction starts tomorrow morning. Wish me luck! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Weed infested rows? Well, last winter the farmer who has leased the land for the last 30 years had the field all in rows in preparation for planting corn in the spring. I bought the property before he got his corn planted and I choose not to give him a lease because I want to turn that 27 acres to pasture. I've not turned the dirt, nor sprayed for weeds, nor mowed, so they weeds have grown uninhibited, some in excess of 8 feet tall. If it was all fenced in I would have my water buffaloes eating it all down. Right now I have in excess of 2,500 feet of fence to get up before I can do that.

I'll be surprised if that tractor doesn't go for $6,000 or more. Tell us more about the water buffalo.

Yea, more about the water buffalo. What kind of money making opportunities are there with this livestock?

I did not bother running the Kubota M4950DT as it had oil in the radiator! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif I may end up bidding some of the other tractors that will be at the auction today. When this Kubota goes up for bid should I yell "IT HAS OIL IN THE RADIATOR!!!" ? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

A friend once told me that 4wd on a tractor only lets you get farther from the house before you get stuck.. I'v proven that a couple times too.

After having used both 4wd and 2wd.. I'd opt for a larger 2wd than a 4wd, if it was available and 'fit' the land and my uses. If size was a concern.. you then have to make the logical choices.

After talking with lots of people I agree that your advice is sound. That is why I bid on a 2WD Massey Ferguson 165 with a hydrolic hay fork. It went for $4,200 which is more than I was willing to pay for that one.

The winning bidder for the Kubota with oil in the radiator got it for $4,000. The same bidder won on several other tractors as well. I left with no tractor. I regret not having bid on a 52HP David Brown 990 2WD tractor. I did not bid because they could not get the 3pt to move. Other than that it looked and sounded good to me. It went for $2,000.

How about 160HP? Do you know anything about the Versatile brand, model 500 tractor (see attached picture)? I am considering purchasing a 1977 Versatile 500 tractor with 5,490 hours on it. It has been used to pull a dirt scraper during at least part of its lifetime. It has a 504 cu. in. Cummins V-8 diesel engine and is rated at 160 horsepower and 15 speed transmission. It has a 3 point hitch, with toplink, 3 hydraulic remotes and 1000 rpm PTO. It weighs about 15,000 pounds. Some folks say to get the biggest tractor that you can afford, but do you think that this one may be too big for my needs?
