Tractor safety video - NH TN65 test

Really interesting short films!

Notice, they're using the same two tractors in all the tests which proves the resilience of these machines.
However, those tests showing the test dummy without a seat belt (especially going under the tractor in the side roll) were definitely eye-opening!!

Even if our machines weigh quite a bit less then that TN65, they're still heavy enough to do fatal injuries in accidents such as those tests show.

( Hello, I ran across the link http://www.me.psu.edu/sommer/projects/tractorFY1/ that displays the effects of tractor rollovers and rear overturn.

After viewing these..."I'm scared straight". )

I was watching these films intently when my wife came in. She watched the tractor roll over 360 and started laughing hysterically. Guess you know whose not going to by driving "our" tractor! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

The only problem I see with those videos is that they make it appear that the tractor turns over slowly (slow motion photography?) and I'd be a little concerned that the videos might lead some to think it happens so slowly that they could jump off if it starts to turn over, while in real life, it usually happens so quickly there's no time to jump to safety. Am I seeing, or imagining, something different in those videos than what others see?

Yikes, very scary stuff. Good reasons to use and not abuse all the safety equipment.

Bird, it looked pretty quick to me. I tried to imagine myself in the side roll over thinking, OK if I just do this or that I can correct it, then it's too late and over I go. The rear roll overs happen really fast and with hardly any wheel slippage at all.

And that side hill didn't look very steep at all. All it took was a little rut and a turn of the wheel and over you go.

I doubt most folks would realize it was too late before it was over.

Very good videos. We all talk about it here and some think they could jump off in time. A few have. But it shows the seat belt and ROPs work to protect the driver. I think I'll take my chances and wear the seat belt and let the safety equipment do its stuff. Learn and live! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Bird,

I watched them several times. I think they're in real time. If you crank up the audio, you can hear the tractor and some speaking. You can also see the guys walking behind the tractor holding the "umbilical". I think it happens fairly fast...We know it's coming. But, if your in the pilot seat, it probably seems a lot quicker.

Should be mandatory viewing for all new owners.
It appears the ROPS does what it is supposed to do.

Great videos, Chuck! Definitely some "scared straight" kind of stuff /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif.

I was especially intrigued by the front/nose ROPS. For those of us who roll our tractors frequently, it could save some money from repairing the hood/radiator area /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

Anybody want to buy a "slightly used TN65" from Penn State "driven by a little, old dummy on Sundays"?

Bird,

I agree that the impression is that they are moving slowly. I right clicked on the links and downloaded several of the full movies. When I played them straight from my hard drive, they were much quicker.

Apparently they are optimized in some way to stream to accomodate low speed dialup access. Anyway, straight from the drive, they flip quick.

The full roll over, took 3 only seconds. Every new tractor owner should view these videos. The statistics are that on average a little over 1 person each day is killed in a tractor rollover. Let's hope and pray it isn't anyone we know. Safety. Safety. Safety. Get those Tiltmeters and install them! It is no guarantee for sure, but even a fraction of a second in judgement can save a life. I have no doubt whatsoever that Rick's Tiltmeters have saved many dozens of lives over the years.

As mentioned previously the size of the tractor does not really matter in a rollover as related to being deadly. I had a great uncle killed when a Gravely garden tractor rolled over him. Be careful.
