Hi All,
Long time lurker on the forum here but FINALLY signed up and I'm ready to post. I've been reading up for a few months here and been trying to get a feel for a potential tractor purchase. Admittedly, I'm pretty much a tractor newbie- my only experience being on a NH TC35 with SS. Enjoyed using that tractor quite a bit but am trying to go with an HST just to make loader work easier. While it first felt large when I got it, I got very comfortable with its size very quickly.

So here is my usage scenario: We're converting a 6 acre palm tree nursery abandoned for the past 5 years to an eventual tropical fruit orchard. This will involve clearing all the hold palms, new irrigation systems, likely quite a bit of filling to avoid water collection and improve drainage, and clearing quite a bit of tall grass and brush that has grown up over the years. We will probably devote about 1 acre eventually to an organic seasonal vegetable garden.

The Tractors: Kioti DK40 SE HST- Considered the CK 35 but liked the extra flexibility with the DK line given the increase in cost. Don't imagine that the size is an epic difference but admittedly I'm a little worried that once the first year or two of getting the property in shape is over that I'll be left with an oversized tractor. That being said, I've got 50 acres in Ashe County NC (NW Corner) and I'm sure I could keep it busy up there.
LS4041- The dealer I spoke with was kind of high on a price coming in around 24k vs. 21 for the DK40HST. Seemed like a pretty equivalent machine but it's kind of a turn off when a dealer tries to high ball you from the get go. I did speak with an out of state dealer in NC and that price was essentially the same as the Kioti. I could use the local dealership for service issues if the need arose (I assume thats not a problem). Both this and the Kioti seem pretty close on features.
Deere 5045- Yeah, it's more money for a pretty similar tractor to the other two, maybe it's the green paint fumes but you can't argue with the resale value. Price difference is probably in the 4k range, but I haven't really price it out as much. I'd probably rather buy the implements I'll need with the money difference but figured I would toss this in there as an option.

Thanks in advance for the collective wisdom.

What about Kubota? You have a dealer there? Get some seat time in, ask for a home trial for a couple days.

Sorry, I have another one to add to your list--the Yanmar LX4100. You'll want to try out the synchro throttle function, it has a two pedal HST transmission that drives like a car.

I know that LS prices have been going up, but that seems like way too much. around here, r4041's go for around $20,500 for HST. Six months ago I bought my r4047 HST for $21,760 ... but it looks like the common prices have jumped up about 1 grand since then.

I am admittedly biased against Deere... they sell nice enough tractors, but besides that green paint (which I'm not particularly fond of) the only thing you seem to get for all your extra money is the "perceived" quality and resale, along with a better assortment of retail swag.

When I last compared, Kioti DK40se HST was about 1000 more than the LS r4041 ... but whereas the jump from the r4041 to the 4047 was only about $1500 with LS, Kioti's jump from the DK40 to 50 was close to $2500-3000.

I have owned both LS and Kioti. both are great tractors, but in my personal experience the LS has been a better tractor.

but with that said, if the dealer holds true to those prices and the LS is almost 3000 more than the Kioti, I would say the Kioti is the better deal.

Kubota makes nice tractors as well, but you are going to pay a premium for their name, just like with Deere.

Another one to look at in the same size and price range would be the Mahindra 4035 ... or if you have the money, step up to its big brother, the 5035, which is a brute.

Good luck shopping, this is a good time to be shopping for a compact tractor, there are lots of good choices and competition out there.

Alright- so here is a revised list:

Kioti DK40SE HST
LS 4041 HST
Mahindra 4035
Yanmar LX 4100

I haven't priced out in detail the Mahindra and Yanmar so I'll go about doing that a bit. Again, appreciate all the feedback with regarding to differentiating factors between these tractors.

I know that the LS has 2 rear remotes, what does the Kioti come standard with? with the Yanmar- they are optional (about 1500).

Got another LS price- 22,396 for the 4041HST, leaving the Kioti still about 1200 less not even considering freight charges. Yanmar pricing for t he 22,994 plus 1500 for the rear remotes. Haven't found a good Mahindra dealer to call just yet.

LS will come with two rear remote standard as well as 3 point draft control standard. Kioti will come with 1 rear remote, no draft control, but it will have a rear three point access lift lever.

I want to say the Mahindra will come with one rear remote

The DK40se will have the draft control as standard. and one remote, with the second at about $400. The Kioti loader will have the highest lift weight at 2760 at the pins. Build quality is good on the Kioti. I haven't owned the others mentioned. Just Kubota's and the Shibaura built NH like you had originally. I don't think you would make a mistake with any of them. They are all good, Just find the one you like the best at the price you like the best.

Kioti DK's include extendable lower link arms/telescoping sway bars on the 3 point and draft control as standard equipment
