Tractor Shutdown

My L5030HTC had sat idle for a couple of weeks and with the winter weather coming I wanted to move it back to the house. Went to get it and it started up when I turned the key. I let it run for about 15 minutes and then started down the road to the house and got about a quarter mile and it just shut off. I was able to get it to the side of the road and caught a ride to the house. Went and got my mechanic cousin and went back to the tractor, turned the key and heard the solenoid click, so I went ahead and started it up. Jumped on it and moved about a foot and it cut off. Pulled the side panel off and felt of the solenoid and it was cooking. We pulled the solenoid off and cut the plunger off, put it back on and she cranked right up and I drove it on home.

I am thinking of putting a manual fuel shutoff cable on it and not replacing the solenoid. Has anyone else had this problem with the solenoid?

Happens ALL the time on all models. Usually because the solenoid get wet but most of the time the tractor will not shut off rather than suddenly shutting off.

Searching for "solenoid" will get many hits.

The replacement is about $70 or so. It is your choice to put on a manual shut off depending if you don't want to spend that money. I'd give it one more try - in fact mine was replaced twice on a L3650.

It happens all the time in salt air too; a can of electrical contact cleaner although expensive does wonders.:thumbsup:

Years ago I had a CJ-5 that would die when the distibutor got wet. I learned many uses for WD-40. It displaced the water, so it may work on your problem too.

I have the opposite problem - my L4200 doesn't shut off with the key. I have a manual shutoff and have used it since I got the tractor 5 years and 500+ hours ago - solenoid was dead when I got it. Yet another thing that I'm going to fix when I get a round tuit.

Contact cleaner wouldn't do this one any good, had some heat degredation with this key little component.

AH yes, the insulation value becomes null when heat is applied for very long periods of use. I guess its time to buy a new shutdown solenoid.

The solenoid probably has no bakelite in the cover housing of the solenoid.

Thats the beauty of air valve slave cylinders for shutdown solenoids and engine throttles-simple to fix.
