Ask the painter to reapply the key protector after painting.

You can but it on line and at most body shop supply stores. Spend the money for the 3m, and expect to have trouble applying it at first. There is a "learning curve" in applying this product an doing a good job. Some apply it "dry", some apply it "wet". I prefer the "wet" application. remember that you cannot touch the back side once the liner is removed. A simple solution I found was to leave a small tab or two, when I cut it out, that gives me something I can hold. Then I carefully lift the tab and razor it off after I have it in place. Squeegee it out, and let it dry. It is not the "perfect solution" but it is close, and it is useful in protecting problem areas.

The product the manufacturers are currently using for clear stone gaurd is a vinyl self adhesive material. The material alone for something that large, from 3m, (the best version), would cost more than the $175 he is paying. There is no "spray on" version that works. Proper metal prep, etch, and a high quality urethane epoxy primer and paint in a "wet on wet" application would be the most durable finish for this application.

Not true. Spray on type of stone guards have been used for years. Many vehicles, especially trucks have this coating on the lower section of the rockers and in the location where you would expect mudflats to be. It's mixed and colored just like paint but is applied thick and is somewhat rubbery. The appearance is usually like a bad orange-peeled paint job but since they are typically applied low, many people aren't even aware that they are there. If you look at the bottom of the rear fender of your car or in the area directly under your bumper, you may notice this coating already in place. They do a terrific job of protecting from stone chips that would cause rust but due to the appearance, I don't think I would want to paint an entire hood like that, even though they work so well.
