Traction Tractor stalls going uphill but works fine on flat and downhill

/ Tractor stalls going uphill but works fine on flat and downhill #21
With 190 hours, unless totally abused, I have to believe that some techniques need to be learned as other than altitude effects that tractor should perform fairly well.
I am a gear tractor owner and needed to learn and adapt to hydrostatic techniques.
I for one would suggest lower gear selection and LESS go peddle/RPMS as the solution.
RPMs won't hurt the tractor but lugging will.
High gear and lugging will merely over heat the oil with negative effect.
If low gear and high RPM does the job, then go for it.
1st and 2nd are work gears with 3rd a travel gear (on flats).
Forget compression testing as you don't see blue smoke which would indicate oil burning with poor compression from bad rings/valves.
Puffs at start up are normal.

made one change in your post..^

My neighbor has a similar size chinese made tractor with just a couple more HP but it's gear driven. He has no problem going up and down this driveway at decent speed. On the flat, my tractor seem to be able to do everything the same as his. He actually likes my tractor more than his.

Trade him. Problem solved. ;)

I have this problem with my Kubota L3700SU. Didn't know about the pedal and the throttle - I'll back off on it. I cleaned the air filter but that made no difference. Waiting for a replacement fuel filter but we just filled the tank and you can't monkey with the fuel filter with a full tank. Got to use the tractor to lower the amount of tank fuel.

So looking at the trouble shooting guide, it occurred to me that there might be air in the fuel system. Looked like bleeding it was fairly simple, so I tried it. The tractor wouldn't run long enough to complete the bleeding. Any ideas?

Sounds like the OP's tractor has the parking brake engaged....or a sticking brake?

Haven't read all the notes. Check the fluid level. The screen in the bottom of the transmission might be starving when you go uphill. Does it back up the same hill? That would be my first checks.

Having gear tractors for the past 45 years and just buying my first hst makes me wonder a bit after reading these posts and others of different issues with them . Gear tractors are so simple , you don't have to rev up the eng. to do something , and wait for everything to warm up just right .There are many things on the plus side just not sure if it's worth it yet .

Check your bleeding procedure.

If it makes you feel any better, I have a 45 hp, turbo charged, hydrostatic drive and going up hills in high gear is difficult. There just isn't the get up and go like a car has. My wife was just learning to drive the tractor and she took it to the city dumps to pick up some tree chucks and I followed her with my truck and trailer. She had it in high range and I forgot to warn her that if you see a good grade, downshift into medium range. Anyway, half way up the hill I remembered it because she slowed down quite a bit. I was ready to push her up the hill if it stalled out and she started coming down backward. I learned a lesson, but maybe you can draw something from that also.
