Wish our mill was like that. We have one in town, and it is about 3 dollars more expensive a bag than the local feed store... go figure... must not like to sell 10 bags at a time.. probably rather a truckload, etc.

We have lots of tractor supply stores around here but I don't like them. I bought several of their implements and I can say from experience that they sell cheap junk that is close to worthless. My very last purchase from them was an auger that broke on the first hole and would have cost me 1/4 it's price to fix - no warranty on ground engaging equipment even if the paint is still intact and it is less than 24 hours old. I bought a good auger from a reputable dealer to replace the broken piece of junk from Tractor Supply. I bought fencing materials from them that I now know came from Mexico and will rust out in half the time that good fencing from a fence supply store down the road will last. I would go 80 miles out of the way to buy good stuff from now on. I for one hope they over expand and go bankrupt sooner rather than later.

Don, I can't talk about what TSC sold in the past, because they're new where I am in New York. But here in NY, they carry only King Kutter implements, which are very good quality. Maybe they've changed their ways from selling junk. I hope so!

"no warranty on ground engaging equipment" - It's not wise to buy anything without checking the warranty FIRST. I always save receipts and boxes in case I have trouble with anything I buy from anywhere so I can box it back up and return it.

Don, in reading one of your other posts about the holes you dug, sounds like you did some really heavy duty work with that auger./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif Of course, I do like TSC, and I'm surprised there was no warranty; maybe that's changed. About 6 years ago, I think they got some defective box blades (bad welds) and I busted two of them; exchanged the first for a new one, broke the second one, and they refunded my money. I also got a grease gun with a defective nozzle, and exchanged it for a new one (and at a different store from where I bought the grease gun) with no hassle at all.

However, I would certainly agree that you need to know what you're buying because they sell some very good stuff at good prices, and they also sell some cheap stuff.

Incidentally, I noticed day before yesterday that the new store in Hillsboro is now open.

Bird, actually the cutting edge that broke was clearly defective. I did go through some rocky soil with it but the paint was not even rubbed off this cutting edge and there are no signs of any kind of significant impact on the cutting edge but the metal near the mounting holes is deformed from the forging process and the part should have been replaced as defective. I am supprised that it did not break off just carrying it from the store. If it showed any signs of abuse at all I would not have any bad feelings towards TSC but I did not. I used their 9" and 12" augers in much worse conditions and the cutting edges on these are dulled and the flighting bent but none simply broke into at the mounting holes on their first use. The wear on these augers is to be expected. Actually I think it is just that particular store that I have had problems with. The other TSC stores have been good to deal with. I did spend a lot of money at TSC this year but never again. I have had a lot of problems with the stuff I bought there but none as bad as this where it would cost me $20 to drill one hole if I chose to fix the auger. Since I did not fix it the hole cost $90. Since this convinced me to upgrade my hole digging gear the next hole cost $1400. I think I lost sight of common sense here but at least I can get repair parts easily!!

Don, I can see how a fellow might be a bit peeved under the circumstances./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif I'm just surprised they didn't offer to refund your money.

Maybe it's that paritcular store's management. While I didn't have the problem you had so I don't know for sure, I'm confident that in the same situation my TSC's manager would have done something for me. I could be wrong, but she's been great on anything I've needed like special orders, returns without my receipt (quite common with me, I'm afraid /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif), defective returns or even letting me take something out to see if it fit before I bought it. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I'm happy with my TSC.

Just bought a 6' box blade from tractor supply for $329. It is a good solid piece of equipment.

We just had a new TSC open in a nearby town (Churubusco). I visited it for the first time today. It was about double the size of the one here in Fort Wayne and way better stocked. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif I'm guessing the new stores may be getting priority on inventory right now. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

I was pleased to find the new store is actually only about 10-15 minutes from the farm down a part of the old, original Lincoln Highway. Actually, it was kind of a nice, relaxing drive on a Sunday afternoon. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

While I was there I broke down and filled out an application for a TSC charge. I don't want the card but it's the only way I can get my 10% off my next purchase. /w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif I really dislike the idea of (effectively) being penalized on a purchase for being a cash customer. /w3tcompact/icons/mad.gif

I'm going to break down and buy that King Kutter 5' brush hog and King Kutter 5' box blade I've been eyeing, so the difference is $85 on the pair. I am going to cancel my new "account" immediately thereafter. /w3tcompact/icons/clever.gif/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif/w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif
