Snow Tractor time in the snow!

/ Tractor time in the snow! #21
Junkman was out in the snow over the weekend testing out his newly acquired snow blower.
The attached picture caught Junkman in action causing near white out conditions.

I think a rear blade is about 3x faster than using the FEL to clear snow,
In my experience the FEL is faster. No need to turn around to see what you're doing. The FEL simply acts like a fixed front blade once the bucket is full.

but a blower is 10x faster!
As you pointed out, it depends on the depth of the snow, how far you have to push it. With the snows we get around here (most less than 12"), I can push snow to the end of a 100' driveway, no problem. Plus the driveways I clear are built so I can push to the end of the driveway, then off the driveway and dump the bucket, back up, and take another pass with very little spillage.

Our area got about 7 inches of snow over the weekend. I cleared 3 driveways and the paddock at our barn in 1.5 hours of tractor time. Total area 5,000 - 6,000 sq ft.

Nice thing about a blower is you can blow AFTER the snow stops, even drifts in the 24" to 36" range vanish. Can't really do that with a rear blade, it seems best to get out with one of those when there is 5" to 8" on the ground so under a heavy snow, you have to go out a couple times.
This is why I don't use a rear blade. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif The only mid-storm clearing I do is to shovel in front of the garage so I can open the doors open (they open out, not up), in order to get the tractor out.

As with most things tractoring related, what works best for one doesn't for others. I couldn't use a 3ph snow blower because of the proximity to houses, cars, etc. Just no safe place to blow the snow from a tractor mounted unit. A walk behind sould be fine...but no fun. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Chris
Man, you are blowing that stuff so high, how do you keep it off of you? How do you stay warm? Do you have neighbors doing the same thing?
