BURLINGTON, Vt. A Vermont man is facing federal charges he possessed a number of tractors and trucks that were stolen over a 12-year period from Vermont, New York, Massachusetts and Maine.
The U.S. Attorney痴 office says 49-year-old James Moorcroft of Brookfield pleaded not guilty on Wednesday.
Prosecutors say Moorcroft orchestrated the theft of six trucks and two farm tractors that he brought to the Brookfield farm where he lives and then used them after removing the vehicle identification numbers.
In February, police in Connecticut examined one of the vehicles at the home of one of Moorcroft痴 relatives and discovered the VINs didn稚 match.
Prosecutors say they believe Moorcroft panicked and then tried to dispose of the vehicles in the other states. The vehicles were recovered in those states.
Moorcroft痴 attorney declined comment.

A Saco man faces grand larceny charges in New York after his arrest for stealing a $20,000 paving roller from a business in the Bronx.
A joint investigation between Saco and New York City police led to the arrest of Mark Bureau, 37, of 106 Pleasant St. Bureau appeared in court Wednesday and waived extradition, agreeing to go to New York to face charges there.
Police in New York were investigating the April 16 theft of the small piece of heavy equipment and had security camera video but few leads. The case received a lot of media attention in New York, police said. Then police received a tip that Bureau was a suspect.
Saco police used photographs and other information to confirm Bureau was the suspect and then New York police interviewed him on Monday.
Bureau was arrested Tuesday and taken to York County Jail in Alfred.
Police recovered the paving roller and the owner is planning to come to Maine later this week to recover the equipment, police said.
