Only operated a tractor once when I was 14 working in landscaping. Now i'm getting into a bit of farming and want to get a tractor. I signed up here to do a bit of research first.

Welcome to TBN. This site is hard to beat for tractor information. If you have a friend that is familiar with tractors that's good advice also. Tractor salesmen try to help but its better to know what you are looking for before going to a salesman.

Welcome to TBN.

Since you are new to operating tractors, I'd strongly advise that you spend some time in the Safety forum to get better acquainted with how to safely operate a tractor. Personally, I believe this should be done long before any consideration is given to the type and size tractor you should purchase.

In addition, you should find a way to actually operate a tractor after you've done some research, because it will allow you to get an actual feel for it. Several ways this can be accomplished are renting a tractor, having a friend allow you to try out theirs, or by test driving a number of different models at dealerships.

Tractors are very useful machines that can be a lot of fun to operate, but they are often very powerful and can be highly dangerous to you and others around you, unless they are operated with safety in mind, first and foremost.

Welcome. Tractor people love to talk - TBN testifies to that. As you go about in your community, look for some folks with tractors - the smaller kind - compact utility tractors (CUT) or subcompacts. Stop, introduce yourself and ask about their tractor, how they like it, what dealer they use and if the dealer is good on service. You can always find some tractor people around farm cooperatives, Tractor Supply and the like. Once you've talked to some tractor folk and read more of TBN, you'll be in good shape to go talk to some dealers.
