I bought mine on clearance after it was discontinued. I can't for the life of me figure out why Hanger 9 stopped making this ARF. Everywhere I take it I get nothing but compliments on its looks. Everything I have ever read about it gives it rave reviews. I realize the one piece wing can be a pain but that's the only down side I can see to this model. I guess the Great Planes Patty Wagstaff was beating its pants off in sales as it was much cheaper and included the hardware but I hardly ever see one of them at my field anymore.

The plane does fly very well. I haven't gotten to fly mine as much as I wanted to. Unfortunately I bought mine right before they lowered the price on them. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif I almost sold mine because of the one piece wing. I actually had it hanging in a local hobby shop and went back to get it. I cut the wings in half and converted it to two piece wings with a wing tube and all. The 3W-60 came with a Mejzlick prop but it was really too small for the engine so I am using a cheap Zinger since that is all they have at the local hobby shop. I had the Mejzlick on and had a rough landing with one wheel on the runway and one in the grass. The plane tipped over and the prop dug into the ground. It dug a trench for about 5 feet and broke the firewall. I kinda wish the prop had broken because I had to rebuild most of the firewall and engine box. My main problem is getting the plane to slow down for landing. It just wants to keep flying. I finally set it up where I could flip a switch and the ailerons would raise slightly and help bring it down and that helped a lot.

Wow, I thought I was going crazy putting a DA50 in this plane! I think they suggest a 40 but I'm just sick of having anemic planes using the recommended motors sizes. I'm not surprised it's hard to slow her down with an engine that large up front. I don't seem to have any trouble slowing down as long as I don't leave the idle set too high. The one piece wing doesn't really bother me as I have a long bed truck with a cap for a transport vehicle. Now if the wind and rain from all of these hurricanes would just go away maybe I could get some stick time in!

Jeff,
Very nice building/covering job.
I hate when something that good looking gets it's first "hanger rash".

I think the reason I have trouble landing is mostly that I am not used to flying planes this size. It is the first gasser I have had. I did convert a Poulan 46cc chainsaw engine and used it at first but it didn't have enough power for me. I really like the 3W in it, it has really livened it up.

Terry, it is an ARF so it comes already covered like that. It is one of the nicer looking ones I have seen though.

My Cap is my first gasser and also my first plane of this size so I totally understand what you're saying. As a matter of fact, I think its size is what led me to put mine in the trees. I could have swore that it was much closer and on the near side of the trees as its size threw me off. Since then I've been a bit spooked to fly it much. Lately I've now discovered the dimented world of Coroplast planes.....chaep, fun and indestructable......which suits my flying style well!!! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

rcmike,

It's truly amazing how far ARFS have come in quality and price. It almost doesn't pay to build a kit when you think of your time involved.
Unless, of course you enjoy that part of the hobby (building) which I do.

I almost always land on the other side of the runway because I think it is closer than it is. I enjoy building also but just haven't had the time lately.

well, after 14 years i finally got my plane flying ( PT-40 )

well, sorta flying.... was doing some crow hops, and taxiing, and got a little higher then i should, and was a little further away then i expected. when i tried to set it down, it bounced about 3' in the air, then did it again, but the 2 bounces sent the plane off the paved surface, and caught a 3" steel post with the right wing.... severed that side completely... ohwell, something more for me to fix...

Don't feel bad. I have been flying helicopters for 5 or 6 years and I crashed my Raptor 50 last weekend due to something stupid I did. I accidentally put the wrong receiver battery (smaller one intended for another plane /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif) in it and it died mid flight. Not good! Went in nose first and flung the end of one of the blades about 400' away!
