Legitimate question, answer in laymans terms please...

How is it that the US, when applying tarrifs that match what other countries are charging us, sends us into whatever you call the tailspin we are currently in? And that tailspin, being both financial and media reporting, real and sensationalized.
Read about how the tariff amounts were developed for each country. It’s not a mirror of what each country has for tariffs. It is some kind of formula that factors in trade balance. The point that isn’t mentioned is that we will never have a trade balance with smalller population countries. More people buy more stuff.

China, India? Do they have more people than us? Yeah, like 5 times as many people as the US.
They are not only in a trade imbalance, but they also steal intellectual property and manipulate their currency.

Why are so many opposed to the US equalling the paying field? Don’t you want to see some manufacturing return to the US in a way that they can compete globally with fiar trade balances?

There's also some degree of chaos as carmakers don't know if they should wait out the storm short term (some are holding cars at the port) or swallow the tarriffs for the next few weeks and see if there's some sort of backtrack or deal made for automobiles.
I’m in the same boat. I don’t have a problem with tariffs, per se, but I have huge problems with the way they’re being randomly changed on the whim of one man’s personal feelings about various world leaders and events, on what appears to be a weekly basis. It is no way to run a business, there needs to be some planning and consistency introduced into this chaotic mess.

I’m tired of electing a new King of increasing autonomy every 4th year, just to have to learn to operate my business and finances under a new realm. Congress and the judiciary need to collectively grow a pair, and disallow this ever-growing use of Executive Actions, on both sides of the aisle. We are quickly becoming a monarchy, who just elects a new monarch every 4th year.

Canada has a significantly smaller population than the U.S. and so do many of the countries with tariffs.

But that’s not what I am talking about. Anyone with a 3rd grade education knows our biggest trading partner is China. This is mostly about leveling the playing field with China who has sucked the life out of this country.
Youre a big union rah-rah guy. Why do the auto makers, steel, etc unions like what trump is doing with tariffs?
Canada is ripping us off and dealing in bad faith with the USA. They will learn.

Businesses are getting very wary and tired of being whip-sawed with the policy flip flops.

The outcome of this chaos isn’t going to be pretty, and once again there will never be a trade balance with smaller population countries. It’s not a useful measure of anything, but seems to be driving this. We will see where this goes in a few months. I’m just glad that I went to cash in my investments back in January, but of course the value of that cash is dropping daily.

Do you understand our previous course was unsustainable? What did you want the gubmit to do? Commit fiscal suicide? We don’t make anything here anymore. You like 80-90% of your pharma coming from China? Something had to be done. A little “chaos” might do us a lot of good, but I know you’ll never see it that way.

So you cashed in ALL of your investments in one month?
Who retires and takes out 100% of all their investments at once?

I changed my mix of investments to treasuries and bonds, didn’t take them out. Wait and see. We could be headed for a great, Great Recession. You talk about something needing to be done? In December the stock market was at an all time high and unemployment was very low. It seems that both of those things are now heading in the opposite directions.

^^I did the same thing. I just have to stay up on how much my estimated tax I have to pay. (y)
