Just checked out the Wolfe Ridge models on their site. They look as beefy as the Timberwolf's,
I'm not saying they aren't a good splitter, but they don't appear to be designed as well as a Timber Wolf...

I see many differences between them, and many times it's all those little things that add up...

I completely agree. This is going to be my last splitter and I plan on doing all my homework before I make a purchase. Things like location of controls, height of table, routing of hydraulic lines, fluid capacity and pump gpm are all things that can make a machine a joy or a pain to use.

I picked up a used American LogSplitter model 25-HH highboy a little over a year. It was in like-new condition. Very well built. It has the following options/upgrades: Honda GX engine upgrade, 4-way and 6-way wedges, outfeed pans with extended hitch, fenders, & hydraulic log lift. I've been happy with it. The only issues I have are (1) a leaking carb (it was that way when I bought it - since repaired) and (2) I tend to like to split things on the small side. The four-way wedge is set up to make larger splits than I like, so I'll probably modify it so the horizontal wedge sits about an inch lower.

Overall, I'm happy with it. It's built like a tank. If I had found a used Timberwolf with similar options for around that price, I would have jumped on it, but it seems no one sells those things.

I just finished watching demo video of wolfe ridge 28 ton splitter with 6 way wedge. Ok looking splitter. I own a timberwolf tw6 and I like that, but I am not in love with the timber wolf. To compare the two, from what I seen and experienced, the timber wolf tw6 has more split power. There were some that the wolferidge splitter struggled on a bit in comparison to the tw6. My tw6 will push most of what I put through it with the 6 way wedge. I have put some splits that get caught crooked on wedge sideways through the 6 way! It also has adjustable wedge for up/down height and I like that. Wolferidge was a fixed wedge.

looks like the wolferidge splitter had a slightly higher beam height which might be good or bad depending of your likes. I am ok with my tw6 height.

my tw6 puts way too much heat out at the operators areas off engine and hyd tank. Poor ergonomics. I hate this about my tw6 as I dont do well with heat. I dont know about the wolfe ridge 28 ton model.

wolferidge model video says 1 to 2 "full" cord per hour and I am telling you unless you have 2 or 3 helpers and or conveyor, there is no way you will get 2 full cord per hour. I am just under 1 full cord in one hour by myself with no conveyor under average conditions with tw6.

one thing I liked about the wolferidge 28 ton splitter was the towing specs. Video says can be towed 65 mph with spring suspension. My tw6 manuel states no towing over 30mph and to haul on trailer if going on roads. Wish my tw6 could go 50 mph down highway. Seems like $9000 splitter could atleast be towed better.

All in all I like my timbr wolf tw6 and if you want a no nonsence splitter for tough rounds, it will split it. I feel the timber wolf suffers from ergonomic flaws and is not worth the price, but from the looks of it is build better and is better at splitting then the wolfe ridge 28 ton in my opinion. So it is up to your personal preferences and budget. This was just my experience and opinion. We do around 100 + full cord a year. good luck shopping around.

Chris at Wolfe Ridge is a good guy to deal with. His base model splitter doesn't have a hydraulically adjustable wedge, but it's an available option. Also, he offers different sizes of cylinders and pump and engine combos too. I've never run a timber wolf, but at $9k I'd never be able to afford one even of I wanted one.

Personally, I'm super happy not having a stand alone splitter. Thanks to seeing Sawyer Rob's awesome TW3, I bought a Wolfe Ridge version of the same thing. I love that the height is adjustable, and I love that the motor is 12' from me. Unfortunately, that means that i can't comment on the ergonomics of his standalone machines. Anyway, I'm glad that you checked them out blackdog. Happy shopping, and enjoy your new splitter whatever you choose. Oh, and be sure to post some pictures when you get it!

A few years back I purchased the Timberwolf TW-P1. If is a well-built and sturdy machine. That Honda engine runs well. I had a 20T 3pt hitch unit that used the tractor hydraulics. I did not like it for two reasons. 1: With 5GPM output the cycle time was too slow. 2: It tied up the tractor. If I wanted to split wood for an hour it was time consuming to hook it up and then remove it. While splitting wood I was not able to use the tractor to move bigger rounds or tow the trailer of split wood.

I like the Timberwolf. The Honda engine is strong and the 4 way wedge and table grate are good additions. It will split large stringy white oak rounds OK, but not with the 4 way wedge. Some really knotty pieces don't split at all. It chews through 20" red oak rounds with the 4 way wedge great. If I were to do it over again I would still go with a Timberwolf, just not the TW-P1 series. Maybe the HV series or the TW-2HD. I don't like that the tow hitch is on the same end as the split wood. Makes it harder to move the splitter around when there is a pile split wood or bark and wood bits blocking the way. I have rented the TW-2HD before. It is a stronger machine and still comfortable to use.

thanks
What you have there looks like Soft Maple. No Veneer in soft Maple, but the dark center makes nice looking wood for table tops and other furniture. If it was Hard Maple it would have a small reddish center.

I just bought this machine. I've only used it for about an hour, but so far I'm pretty happy. My biggest complaint is the slip on 4 way leaves plenty of room for improvement and the valves aren't very smooth. One feature I do like is the 3.5 inch ram that makes fast return stokes.

I've got about 2 hours on this and so far I'm pretty happy. This is about 30 minutes worth of wood working by myself. I really need 2 people for better productivity. IMG_0191.JPG
