Cut the log over size for the mill eg. 8'4" or 8' 6" .

I think it's at 9' now so that's about perfect! The rest of log had spitting damage when wind broke top out. I may try to salvage some from that as well.

I am crying inside a little bit hearing about Walnut being used as firewood.

I think a better idea is to have it milled up and then sell it on craigslist. It's worth $$$

My sentiment as well! I would love the walnut for woodworking.

Beautiful. I agree that burning black walnut as firewood is a cryin' shame. Like burning money.

Well, there were a lot of scraps on the walnut tree I cut down, so I don't feel bad about burning the leftovers. It would have broke my heart to split and burn the main logs though.

I was splitting some oak for firewood last week that was a bear due to all the crotches and burls. That one may have been better off milled into some interesting lumber.

Yes and the smaller stuff has quite a lot of softwood on the outside. So can't save it all for lumber.

Not sure about up there but they were considerably more expensive than other brands when I was shopping new a few years ago, so if new is any indication of used prices, I think I'd look at other brands. I eventually bought a uni-forest from Hud-Son Forestry Equipment in USA and shipped it down to NZ considerably less than what the Aussie Tajfun distributor quoted me. Very happy with the uni-forest winch and the way Hud-son looked after me.

Are you looking to sell one? I've seen various good brands advertised on craigslist for US$2-3.5k if in very good condition, and the older ones can go for under $2k.

If it great condition, $1500 would be a great deal and I'd be happy with anything under $2.5k. Above that price, I'd rather buy new.

But it's not about me, rather what it's worth to you. If you take a look on craigslist at other 4-5t pto winches, you'll get a fair idea of price. Also, depending on how much you'll be using it or want to spend, I'd be checking if it could be upgraded later down the line to their hydraulic and remote options. Not that there is anything wrong with a manually operated one.

Ok, that's a great starting point. I Dontt see any currently on Craigslist in my surrounding areas. The one I am lookin at for sale is an auction and at 1k so far. I assume it will jump up in the next few hours but I am keeping an eye on it.

I would definitely get a lot of use out of it. A) at home B) on jobs.
