We use about 18 full cords a year. In the past 2 weeks we have cut split and stacked it all. But in the process the "skidder" found a soft spot. Dispite chains on all 4, it took a truck to pull it out. http://s699.photobucket.com/user/wv... Uploads/20150402_100641_zpsu7xuokkr.jpg.html

Yeah that ditch might be a little soft.
Was it also a case of crossing a ditch at an angle where the front axle pivot maxes out leaving opposite corner tires hanging in the air to spin?
And diff. lock 2WD is only way forward?

I figure, 6 cords.
And I thought I was the only one trying to figure/guess how much firewood there was, my guess was 8 cord in the pile, to the right, and the picture was taken yesterday.

think i was biting off more than i could chew

Are your wheels loaded, my guess is, this was just a demonstration pic, I'd like to of seen the video of trying to move that log with the grapple. The last time I cut a big Elm tree like that was in 1981, your Elm trunk might make better lumber then firewood, if Elm does make lumber.

we have a winner. between the log and the grapple there is over 5700 lbs up front, my tractor won't lift that no matter the ballast. it will be turned into lumber (about 13.5 is straight and fairly knot free) at some point, but not for a while. if i need to move it in the mean time i'll have to drag it there

I have hauled hundreds of rick of wood this spring, but this is the only picture I got of my tractor. It is a big 20 inch diameter red oak. Still not as big as log in the the first picture.

That is a very unique grapple you have there! Never seen one like it before. Do both sides of the "claw" move when activating the cyl, or just the front/top portion? I guess it's a "pin on" (to the loader) only?

Boss admited later that his choice of ditch-crossing angle was poor... he has taken quite the ribbing over the incident. I was the tow truck driver and the cost to him was that I documented the stuck.

The grapples are Westendorf Brush Crushers. Yes they pin on, but do not require a 3rd function hyd line on the loader. For the amount of wood work we do, they do a good job.

Well I spent to much money today on something I could have built very similar myself but just don't really have the time.
