I am just thinking of bending over and picking the wood out of the bottom of the cages 10 years from now when I am not as able as i am now. Am I worrying about nothing?

I can reach all but the bottom few rows. At that point it can be tipped over if needed.

I found out cages without the bladder from a recycling firm. $18 each.

If you're picking them up with forks on a loader, this is what I'd do: pick up the cage on the forks, securely chain the cage to the fork carriage, dump out the cage. If you've got enough dump angle, you should be able to shake the wood out just fine.

What am i missing? I am thinking of using pallets or cages or whatever to cut the wood into and to bring up to the house and never have to handle it again. I can't think of anything worse than bending over a railing to pick up wood. Motown - if you are going to dump the cages what are you dumping them into/ Doesn't that defeat the purpose of having a supply of nice neat wood off the ground next to the house?

I think he thought that you were concerned about being able to bend over to pull wood out of the crates. THAT is an issue for MY wife (short)! You are talking about making life easier for when you get older- this is the exact reason I decided to invest in the system that I'm now using.

I'm still wondering why you would bother. I could build something that's a lot more operator friendly for similar money. If I ever get a flatbed truck I'll build huge wood carriers. I have to haul them about 3 miles so I'm currently limited to the size of my truck bed.

A couple of mine came with a window cut out of the center leaving the top couple of rails in place. I have filled both with wood and doesn't seem to have caused a structural issue.

Friend of mine uses IBC cages but flipped on their side with the pallet removed so they are open on both ends, and pallet on the bottom so the forks still move them easy.
