That is one area of the country that I have never been through and my wife and
I are planning a trip late this summer just to see it. I am looking so forward to it.

Coastal redwood trees can grow to over 300' tall. They live only along the coast from Big Sur to the CA/OR
border. I recommend the Redwood State and National Parks up in the NW corner of CA....not as crowded
as Muir Woods NM.

I shouldn't say that I have never seen them. My parents told me I saw them when I was 2 but my memory is a little vague. I keep hearing about them so I need to see them. They sound like something you need to see - video just doesn't give you the feel for it.

This weekend was single digits in the Dacks and perfect skidding conditions. Took a lot of firewood trees out. (The pile was not all this weekend ) :)

Don't the giant sequoia seeds only naturally sprout after a fire?

I'll second that recommendation. I lived in Humboldt county, prime redwood country, for a while. Also drive the Avenue of the Giants parallel to highway 101 in Humbolt county. If you're more adventurous go out Gold Bluff road (dirt but easy unless its raining) to the ocean. You can hike Fern Canyon and maybe see the Rosevelt Elk (the herd hangs out there or by 101 in Redwood NP).

Where I am now is 400 miles south of there. We have redwoods down here too but they are not as big as up north and there aren't many big stands of them. There's some second growth redwods on our place but most of the trees are madrone, tan oak and doug fir. Redwoods need summer moisture, and since it doesn't rain in the summer they get it from fog drip. That limits their range.

Today's seat time was battling with a huge stand of poison oak that's grown over a road I want to open up (and next to it, and into a tree). I only got part way through it. It's grown over a nice rock wall from when the place was settled and I was being careful to preserve it. I'm trying to get what I can now before it leafs out and becomes more virulent.

Yes but they're not related to redwoods even though the old common name was giant redwood.
Both sequoias and redwoods need bare mineral soil to germinate. Fire can clear out the duff on the forest floor and expose the bare soil. Floods can do that as well (and floods are common in redwood country). But fire is not required like with the fire pines whose cones won't even open to release the seeds unless they're heated by a fire.

Be careful... Poison Oak and I don't get along... I would always get it just from the dust running the dozer if it was dry... had to time my Dozer work 2 to 3 days after a rain just to get it done.

Two search and destroy mission each year with a backpack sprayer... cut the coke bottle diameter big stuff at the base just before it spirals up into the tree canopy...

When we have company the usual Redwood run is to Big Basin and surrounding area...

Welcome to TBN. Nice neat pile of logs you pulled out ! Your tractor set up looks pretty good to my eye for doing that kind of work too. What is the grapple you are using ??
