Those aren’t old growth that’s second two why leaving something that’s dying? Clear cutting is a must you can’t just keep thinning of the natural regeneration and expect a rotation of good viable timber in say 60 to 70 years.
You have to make room for the little guys to grow too. Taking down one big tree can let three or four others get more water and light.

You could certainly give it a workout. Beautiful pictures you've posted.

I keep reading Echo doesn't have much following among forestry crews. Not sure if true or why.

I own one Echo but it’s been worked over super hard to make it run right just to live on a mill it’s heavier then my 3120 husky is but it does have more low end torque as well.

I make a living commercial thinning on the west coast you can’t do that what you end up with is a bunch of diseased undergrowth that is stunted which is how we end with huge fires that happen.

Yeah, well they're never going to be old growth, if you cut them down. Yeah sorry I didn't mean to say those were old growth trees, I have no idea. Why are they dying?

Age it’s like everything else they have a date as well, some have root rot which is site dependent but much over 100 years of age you will see a Doug fir start to slow down.

I have a 40 acre farm in Indiana, huge fires are not as big a problem here. I have a lot of giant old oaks that shade out the small younger trees. It does make them grow nice and straight before branching out at the tops. I noticed that where I harvested some of the giants that weren't doing so well ~20 years ago, the trees around them have taken off rather than being diseased or stunted. There is still enough canopy to keep the honeysuckle and other scrub growth in check.

Likely, someone knowledgeable has determined when and what to cut...

Although those are some majestic trees nevertheless!!!

Just finished a week of hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and even those trees - after being untouched for over 90 years ~~can not~~ be compared in size to the one being felled in your last set of pictures Mr. Skeans.

This patch of fir was never thinned it’s around 80 or so the size doesn’t compare to the other patches that are younger and thinned with the small less dominant stems being removed.

This patch was pole thinned 30 years ago the average length of the poles was 125’ long this is what thinning can do. In this stand the average length of usable before the break is around 200’.

How many times over the years did you have to put in the bouncing boards?

Stihl makes good products and I've had great experiences when purchased from servicing saw shops. The experience I had buying Stihl at Rural King nearly soured me on the brand forever.

Recently I've gravitated towards Echo being my primary OPE brand, and I haven't yet been disappointed. Got an Echo CS352/590/7310p. Handles pretty much every task at this point. Wanting to pick up a 501p or possibly a new 4310 if I can get one.
