That band was only two weeks old. About 4 hrs a day cutting. I don't know how much actual running blade through wood, but I'm there 4 or 5 hrs a day working.I also did that for years, then my friend who has the same model mill as mine, said he never does, and he's had his mill for many years too.
SO, I quit doing it too, with NO change in anything to do with the mill or bands... It's now been even more years and neither of us has ever cracked a band, in fact to this day I've never even broken a band, not even one.
Without seeing anything obvious, normally cracked bands come from letting the band get too dull before re-sharpening, improperly sharpening bands and/or too small of band wheels that over work the band from going round and round, making the sharp bends around smaller band wheels...
I'll probably think of something else later...

Seems kind of quick wear to me, but I'm the FNG.
The band wheels are quite large on this thing. I'd guess 24".
So today........
I got nothin'. No adventures at all.
Cut my stuff, moved onto the next one. I'm afraid now
I checked the blade and guide bearings after I was done for any sign of damage. None that I could see.
I saw marks on the inside cover of the band wheels but that was nothing new, except I don't remember it
looking so fresh. Doubt it has anything to do with the band cracking because it cracked from the tooth backward
and there were no edges or burrs on the back edge of the blade from scraping.
That whole cover is out of whack a bit. I've seen the cutting head on it's side twice myself, and who knows how many
other times it was knocked over.
I'll keep watch on it all.
