Tractors whines but won't start

Hi,

I have an older Ford 4 cyllinder tractor which starts by turning the ignition 1/4 turn, then putting the gear shift in the start position.

I was running it this morning, turned it off, then back on, and it made a whine but then nothing when I engaged the gear shift.

I started checking electrical connections in case something had shifted, and found that the connection between ignition coil and distributor was just a loose wire. I've replaced that and it still doesn't start.

Should I be thinking 'starter,' or something else?

If I understand you, the starter is spining, but the engion doesent turn over. You most likly have a starter problem. It could be the silinoid, or the bendix spring on the starter gear. If you tap the silinoid, it may start.

I've never heard of a tractor (or any vehicle for that matter) that had the starter solenoid energized using the transmission shifter. Every one I've seen has been through the ignition switch or a dash mounted starter button (ok, some foot operated ones too! ). The only switch I've ever seen shifter-related is a neutral safety switch. Is this something peculiar to Fords? Just curious...

Sounds like a starter solenoid. That is the part that forces the starter gear into the flywheel gear when energized.

Let's say that it doesn't HAVE a starter solenoid, but is old enough where it has what I suspect is a module. Where does someone go to get THAT?
