I have a 12 year old L4200 with a Kubota loader and one remote, GST and 575 hours. Its in VERY good shape. I'm looking to trade up to a L5040 GST with loader and one hydro remote. Dealer has $10,500 on my L4200 and value of 28,000 for the L5040. So $17,500 difference. Thats the starting price. No haggling yet. Does that sound about right for the tractors? I'm really in the dark here and would appreciate some feedback as to those figures. Not interested in anything but the GST trans and that model. Thanks for your comments!

You might ask what they will take without a trade.
You might want to consider selling your tractor yourself.
It may or may not be something you want to mess with.
Kubotas website says base model is 28,800+.
I would offer $15,000 + trade in and see what happens.
A lot of dealers unload used tractors wholesale unless they have a buyer waiting.

WHY !!! Unless of course, you're just rich and money is no object.
I mean, really, if your 4200 is like you say, how could a new 5040 serve you any better ?
Just throwing away a lot of money in my opinion.

That's not a bad price on the 5040, looks like maybe 15% off. I think you might be able to get a few thousand more for your tractor trying to sell it on your own. You can try deal a little more but I wouldn't be surprised if he stands firm.
If you go to Kubota's web site you can use the "build my tractor" to figure out what retail price is. I've seen people get up to 20% off, but 15% seams to be more of a really good discount. Are you going to finance the tractor? If not you may be able to get $1000 back from Kubota's CIR.

I'll not finance. Arky had me pegged correctly, right off, as a rich guy. Most of us rich guys spend all our free time on the internet searching for prices and making fun of the poverty stricken Kubota owners therin. I've not even been able to fly my G5 to my private island this summer cause I've spent all my time shopping around for good deals.:thumbsup:
The reasons for the trade are: A family illness means I'll take over mowing and tending to a 100 acre farm. The extra 7 pto HP will come in handy.
The adjustable links will make hookups easier. I'll add the L4200's hooks to the arms to make it even easier. And its catagory 2 which matches some of the implements I'll be taking over.
I'm disabled and have not much use of my legs. A GST is the only transmission where I feel totally in control. No other tractor is a option. I've tried the HST. Nope. I figure I have 10 to 15 years left of active lifestyle and this tractor should see me through that nicely. I'll be putting a LOT more hours on this one than the 4200 from here on out.
The loader of the L5040 has 4200 pounds of breakout force :licking:. The L4200 has 2550. I will also have to take over hauling gravel from a creek to a 450 yard road. Its trek of 1/3 a mile per load of gravel and pretty rough. I think with the greater roll back angle of 42 degrees compared to the 23 degrees on the L4200 I will be albe to haul close to twice the load of gravel per trip. Its very hard to get a full load with the 23 degree angle off a flat gravel bar. As of now it takes about 40 trips per year. I can only make about 5 trips before I wear out.
The L5040 has over 600 pounds more hitch capacity. That will come in handy as I can (I hope) just leave a 6 foot mower on while I haul gravel. The L5040 weighs over 800 pounds more. I think it can handle the trip with a mower mounted better than the L4200. Less tail wagging the dog effect.
Some of my mowing is pretty tough. Tall ragweeds in bottomland (nine feet, I kid you not) and fescue on the uplands. The extra 7 PTO should make that go faster.
I just happen to be going to Somerset KY this Saturday and I'll check out Barlow's. This trade is just something I've thought about for a couple of years and it might never happen but its fun to shop anyhow.:confused2:

I am in a similar situation to you and am now using a L5030 pretty effectively to maintain one of my properties. For me the HST works well, but I am looking at a M7040/M8540 for another farm as the needs there are not only a little different, but a 50 HP machine won't operate the equipment.
I just finished mowing some 8' weeds and brush this week with my 5030 and a 7' Land Pride and it worked like a champ.
I am in my 60's and disabled, but with the right equipment I can still get quite a bit accomplished; good luck and hang in there.

One thing I would get would be a tooth bar. It'll help as much, if not more for getting that gravel out of the stream bed. I like the kind that uses the same teeth as larger equipment uses. I have broken a couple on my back hoe but I have also broken lots of ledge and rocks.
Personally I would care if you were rich and just wanted to upgrade, lol. It's your money and you're letting us help you spend it. That's one of my favorite sports. I think the 5040 only comes in 4wd, maybe others here could confirm it but I think your best bet may be the R-4 tires. The tread being closer together than the Ags should help keep from getting flats. Not knowing what your stream beds are like but any sharp rock could really be a problem. But that's just my guess.
Have you thought about getting the quick attach for the FEL? If you are sure you'll never need the use of anything other than the bucket it may not really be of value but there are times where a set of forks comes in real handy. You can get the slip on forks but you loose a lot of lifting ability because of how far in front of the tractor they are. I use mine more than I ever thought I would. Sometimes with just heavy deliveries.
