Trailer brake service

How often should you service your trailer brakes. I don't use mine very often and sometimes they don't work when I first hook up. The connection is OK it's just that the brake don't work till I turn it way up and work it some. After working it some I can set it to what I want and it is ok till the next time I use it witch may be a couple months.

I would service them every 3 years or so. That includes repacking the bearings and replacing the inner seals. I also adjust my brakes every 2,500 miles or so.

Care to elaborate on "adjusting"? Some of us are clueless.:ashamed: I know on air brakes, you tighten then loosen a quarter turn. Is this similar?

RE: Adjusting Brakes

I know this doesn't help those who already have brakes on their trailer, but if you are adding brakes or replacing old ones Dexter now makes brakes that are supposed to be self-adjusting:
