Trailer frame sizing

   / Trailer frame sizing #11
I built a 5x8 dump trailer recently for the exact same purposes as you are intending to build one. I bought a set of plans and the plans specified C4 5.4 channel for the frame and 2x4 11ga tubing for the bed and cross rails. They were engineered drawings and I compared it to lots of other similarly sized dump trailers and it was about the same. I ended up putting more bracing on the frame than the plans just in case.

Using the axle placement suggested by the drawings, I ended up with lots of tongue weight (at least more than I can lift when it's empty). The hydraulic cylinder plus the power unit adds 200lb on there.

One disadvantage to a single axle setup (which I have) is that the trailer's frame/axle capacity will likely exceed the tire's payload. Maybe implement tires could be used rather than trailer tires.
