Trailer registration in Maine

The hassle is getting it inspected $10/year, plus an hour or more to get the inspection done.
So, to register in NY for 5 years it would be $250 ($40/year for registration and $10/year for inspection).
To register in ME for 5 years would be $90 (per Maine Trailer Registration Pricing Information - MaineTrailerRegistrations.com ).
Worth it to me not to have to get the stupid thing inspected every year.

Now that makes more sense to me. I agree. Here in good old Indiana we have no inspections on anything. Not cars, truck, trailers, ect so we have no hassles like you guys do.

Maine does have a weird bargain deal on trailer registrations. It is quite out of character for our State Government.

If you live here and buy a new vehicle, watch out for your wallet! I just bought a new 2012 Ford F150 Supercab 4x4. It's an XL (near bottom model) with a few options and a base v6. After paying the 5% sales tax, I had to pay $781 in Excise tax, plus a $40 registration fee. Th excise tax tapers off some as the vehicle ages, but they hit you hard in the first few years!

I'm Mass, 6.25% sales tax...excise tax every year ( my 2011 F350 regular cab was 800.00 this year) plate renewal every year is 240.00 plus inspection over 10k GVW is 125-140.00 every year. A 10k GVW trailer is 270.00er year for the plate and another 125-140 inspection every year plus excise tax. It is fuggin ridiculous.

Wow! I didn't realize Taxachusetts had gotten that bad!

Just curious. Do any of the states go after their residents who register their trailers in Maine but do not otherwise have ties to that state?

Steve

Read something about that, can't remember if my home state or a neighboring one was going after people regisering in a western state (Idaho?) and trying to evade the home state taxes.

Didn't apply to me so I didn't keep the details obviously, but yes some states are.

I know someone will correct me if i'm wrong, but I researched this as well. The cost to register trailers here in NH is getting out of control also (along with everything else).

For those who claim its illegal if you live in a state other than Maine:

My understanding is that when you file the paperwork with the broker, essentially you become a 'partner' with them in maine. Since you now have stake in a business in Maine where your trailer is registered.... all is legal.

No?
Exactly. The easiest correct response, "I have a business interest in Maine." Oklahoma is even cheaper, but I haven't figured out the logistics yet.

OK..... so I am largely correct in my understanding of it.

Then..... whether it is "illegal' or not in your state depends on wheter or not:

1) your home state has a law on the books that states something to the effect of ' trailers ( or vehicles) must be registered in this state if they are parked in this state 'most' of the time.

2) your home state wants to spend the time to enforce said law by checking the plates on the trailers sitting in peoples' yards.

With that being said, I would be willing to risk it here in my home state. I'm unaware of there being such a law here ( but couldn't be surprised if there were).

I do recall. maybe a year ago..... one of the Boston TV stations doing a story on Massachusetts coming down on residents who had their motorhomes registered in Montana (to my recollection, it was Montana) because it was very inexpensive to register there. The state of Massachusetts was fining people some ridiculous amount of money if they refused to register their motorhomes in Mass.

Doesn't sound like a loophole to me. Sounds like Maine (at least in this case) has a good idea, business-wise.

That is not bad at all. Indiana has 7% sales tax, excise tax, and plate/registration fees. My 07 and 06 trucks cost me about $400 each last month.

Well I went through the same thing. I live in Massachusetts and have a place in New Hampshire. I have a trailer that never leaves New Hampshire. Unfortunately I have to register the trailer in Massachusetts. Insurance company told me so, followed by Mass registry, followed by my attorney who checked. There is an additional problem which is Massachusetts inspects trailers of the weight class I have 7500. Unfortunately I never take it to Mass and am not planning on the 200 mile trip to do so. Hence it has never been inspected. It is registered every year. If someone knows a way to get around this and still have insurance etc I would like to know.
