Greetings, TBN,

Does anyone have experience trailering a CK3510 without a backhoe?

I'd like to get the shortest trailer that will work, but am wondering about weight distribution. I'll be towing with a flatbed truck that can transport loader bucket, and a couple of implements, so the tractor alone with the loader arms is all that needs to fit on the trailer. Could I get by with 12', or will I need 14' to distribute the weight properly?

Thanks for the input!

I just picked up my CK3510 hst with FEL last night. I have a 12 dump trailer. I set the bucket down on top of the front of the trailer. Pulled it 70 miles home with no issue.

Well that's convenient! A 12' tandem trailer just appeared on Craigslist 1/2 mile from my house. :)

Thanks for sharing your experience.

I can’t help posting my response knowing full well you have a very good reason I’m sure for wanting as short of a trailer as possible. I have owned a number of trailers and from experience I found that my old contrail c-10 16’ 10k trailer was perfect for my LK 3054 XS TLB. I get that you don’t have a TLB, but you may have implements and other scenarios down the road in addition to the bucket for the loader. A trailer is one of those things that I prefer to get a little bit bigger than absolutely required in order to accommodate future requirements. A trailer requires very little incremental maintenance with an increase in size. Obviously storage gets more difficult with size.

Depends on how often and how far. I got an 18’ to haul my 3510 with FEL and 5’ cutter. It hangs off about 2-1/2’ I would consider a 16’ but that is as small as I would go if you haul anything beside the tractor and FEL.

I have had to haul mine a few dozen times about 40 miles down windy farm roads (don’t have a barn on my land yet) and cannot imagine doing it with less than 16’; in fact I wish I had gone 20’ to allow for my tiller (as it is the 18’ is only enough for tractor FEL and cutter).

For a single haul - sure you can get by with almost anything. But do not put yourself, someone else, or your $30k equipment at risk because you did not buy a $2200 trailer (that’s all mine cost new).

Finally check your state and local laws - Texas allows a max of 4’ overhang without permit.

longer trailers usually tow nicer and are easier to back up

I second the 18" trailer. I use mine for about everything

18 foot...at least. I'm looking at 20 footers for my rig. That should allow me to get most of the mass of the tractor between the two axles and balance the weight appropriately. People try to haul things on shorter trailers and they wind up unbalanced, which could potentially induce sway. You don't want that....like ever. Best to use a longer trailer just for peace of mind.

If space is a consideration, you may try renting a trailer if you only move it occasionally. I know folks that don't want to own a trailer because it's only used intermittently, and they want to avoid paying for registration, maintenance, and finding a place to put it. Renting makes sense for them. I personally own a 14 foot tandem axle trailer I use for runs to the local home store or helping folks move things. I borrow a 20 foot trailer from a good friend every so often when I need to move the tractor. I also help him maintain it...bearings, brakes, etc. I get the use, and he gets the help keeping it maintained.

I move a L3800 on a 16” foot trailer. With the loader bucket on and the box blade attached it fits with only inches to spare. I don’t care to put additional implements on the truck but I wouldn’t want to remove them. The second thing to consider is weight capacity. There’s a few skid steer trailers built short and heavy but hardly ever is a 12’ trailer adequate.

18' minimum, no way to foresee ahead.
I went 20', 10k and was not wise enough to get 22-24', 14k.
So now I tip toe slowly with 6' cutter hanging over by 3' or so max'd out at about 10.7k.

Thanks for all the replies, TBN!

I do intend to purchase a new 20' (maybe 22') trailer at some point in the next year or two. I'm looking for a shorter trailer as a temporary measure that will also be useful for other purposes once I get the longer trailer. I have a small trailer presently, will eventually have a long one, and am hoping to get a used mid-sized one for the moment. I just don't know everything I want to get the longer one presently, nor do I have time to carefully investigate. Furthermore, I do not presently have a tow vehicle that is well suited to hauling 4+ tons. My current tow vehicle (big 70s truck) will tow a lot, but is legally limited to 7000 lbs, so saving a few hundred pounds on 4-6' of trailer makes all the difference.
