Trailer size

My question is after you load how do you retract them or do you guess what the height is after loading and set it a little shorter so there will be room to retract them. I'm sure this is probably a newb question. I've been thinking about trying something like this ever since introduction to trailer surfing. Really don't want to do that again!!!

You set trailer jacks much shorter than the trailer (about 3 to 4"), when you start up the ramps the trailer will rock back and set down on them, once the load is balanced on the trailer you'll have clearance again.

Heck, I went to load my Silverado on my 20' trailer and the durn thing won't fit due to the ramps being in the way (as they lean forward). I either have to build a new way of holding the ramps stationary or extend the trailer to 21'.
No matter how long your trailer is, it is always too short for something!

If you are talking about Jack Stands I guess on the height. Couple of times they were stuck so I just idle the tow vehicle forward. They pop right out. You get good at estimating the height after a few times.

The problem with swivel jacks is that they all are crank types, and that will slow you down unnecessarily. For stabilizers, you really want a drop leg type of jack, or a swing out jack, with about 1" height increments. Then you can set and retract them instantly.

As far as height, I normally leave 1" to 1.5" of gap (hand/knuckle thickness) between my blocks and the trailer frame, and that's enough to accommodate the load and let the blocks slide out freely after loading. The blocks are at the very back of the trailer, so they only carry the load as the tractor is driving up the ramps and over the rear. Once I get forward enough to have proper tongue weight and level the trailer, there is once again space between the blocks and trailer.

I have a JD 4500 with loaded rear tires, loader, and backhoe. Base tractor is around 3500#, loader maybe 900#, loaded tires estimate 1000#, and backhoe around 1000#. I use a 20' deckover, 12K axles without problem and agree with soundguy, 18', 10k trailer would be the safest route to go.

Good Luck in your decision!!!

Below are pictures of my TC40D on my old 20' 10K and new 22' 14K tilt deck. The 20' left no room to balance the load which is one of the reasons I upgraded to the longer trailer (besides the tilt deck is great).
