Trailer (ST rated) Tires Cracking on Inside Edge

Seems as good a place as any to ask my question. I was having the truck tires changed from studs to non-studs last week. I only have one set of rims. They basically tore the bead trying to get the tire off, and now I'm down a tire.

The tires are maybe 6-7 years old. Nokians. The shop guy told me that old tires get brittle. What do you think, normal wear and tear? Or someone screwing up? I don't know the shop that well and am still trying to form an opinion as to their competence level.

I'd change them all if they are that old. Yes, they get stiff. I'd say the guys taking the tires off, didn't necessarily do anything wrong.

6 to 7 years old for a vehicle (truck, trailer, car) is an old tire. I start thinking about replacing mine at 5 years and always before 7 years is up even if there's lots of tread. Over the road tires are not a place to try to save money. My tractor tires are much older than that and I'll continue to use them until I get tired of having to inflate them every time I go to use the tractor.

The shop is probably fine. If I were running the shop, I'd have warned you of the age of the tires before I started work.

In my case remember the tires are only doing half-year duty, so, for example, their treads are in great shape despite being 6-7 years old.

I'm not sure what you mean..... Your tries at 6/7yo are still going to be cracking from age, where they've been used or not. If you see no cracks, they may go another year.

Often times, “new” tires have been on the shelf for awhile. Age is determined by reading DOT Date Code on sidewall.

Tires that sit dry out and crack quicker than those that don't... UV, ozone, sitting in one spot, etc., all take a toll. RV people try not to get new tires older than 6 months (sitting on the shelf), or run tires older than ~6yrs, regardless of tread left.
