Trailer Suspension Problem

One other thing, is the trailer level when you tow it. it seems the back axle is not level with the front axle. ( it may have been on a Jack stand) . This may have caused your original problem, now you have reduced the ride height it still should be level so both axles carry the same weight and center shackle should be level.

What is a "walking beam"?

The suspension is bumpier now but not bumpier than other equipment trailers. I believe it works fine.

The walking beams are the triangular suspension elements that connect the rear spring eye of the front spring to the center frame mount and the front eye of the rear spring. As I stated: the 3 holes in each of mine are equidistant from each other. They are cast iron, too. Yours look like stamped steel. Also, I replaced all my spring and beam bolts with hollow ones having a Zerk fitting on the end so I can grease them. My trailer started to rattle quite a bit and a check showed most of the spring cross bolts were heavily worn. You might want to replace yours if you are going to tear into it.

I have replaced all the bolts. I was calling the "walking beam" an "equalizer". I will consider larger "walking beams" in the future but I think I will try it as is for now. This trailer was used to haul 11 round bails at a time before being parked for 10 years. So it has had a tough life and been well tested. We replaced or rewelded and strengthened everything that damaged.

You were correct - it is an equalizer. A walking beam suspension is something different all together.
