trailer tags from Maine

( I know a guy who has an equipment trailer he keeps registered in Maine. I forgot why, cheaper I guess. I think if you know someone with a Maine address, you can get by. The troopers know about it, and they give him a good going over when he gets pulled over. Apparently it's legal. He still does it. ) -Apparantly he has some convoluted story and he's stickin' to it. Maybe he has a relative that lives in Maine and registers it for him in their name, but then legally they own it, with all the liability that goes with it. As far as I know, an individual can only have one legal address at a time. As for the reason for doing it, I would assume it's financial. I have heard that some trucking firms that have a presence in several states will register their semi-trailers in Maine because it's cheaper. I don't know if that's still true.
