I have a 6' x 12' single axle trailer that I used to haul the 2200 on. Now I know the 23 is the same, but now I have this backhoe that may need to be trailered along with the 23 and the FEL. I am wondering if I should get a 2 axle with brakes. I have a 2001 Sport Trac 4 x 4 and it pulls fine, just not sure about the trailer with the backhoe.

Disclaimer. answers to this post will be printed for the wife to see as testimony to my needing a bigger trailer, however names will be removed to protect those answering from the wrath of the wife..........when I got the BH, I "forgot" to mention I might need a bigger trailer.

thanks guys!

Towing a 1600 lbs tractor plus trailer is pushing it for a trailer without brakes. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I pull my B2910, Bachhoe and Fel with a Astro Van AWD without any problems. Total package weighs about 4000 lbs.

I use a Reese Equalizer Hitch and Prodigy brake control. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

After you have towed a trailer with the hitch and brakes you will may never tow anything over 2000 pounds without it. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I looked up the brake requirement for Indiana. 3000 lbs is the maxumium without brakes and breakaway.

There's no doubt that you can haul the BX23 on a 6' x 12' trailer (assuming the suspension; tires, wheels, axles, and springs are the proper size for the weight); however, there's also no doubt that a tandem axle trailer with brakes would be safer both for you and for everyone else on the road, and your knuckles won't be quite as white when you get where you're going. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Another question is, how is the balance with the new tractor on it? Do you have enough tounge weight? I have a 16' trailer with brakes for my kioti 1914. I'm glad I have that size trailer with brakes.

I would suggest you sell that one and get a tandem 3K axel trailer with brakes on all four wheels.
The problem with your truck is that the tractor and trailer will be approaching the weight of the tow vehicle. Pulling will be no problem, an emergency stop is another story. Clearly the stopping is far more important.

I bet that ford is pre wired for a brake controller. My dodge is. Just buy a controller and plug it in, less than $100.

Have not trailered it yet, and from the responses here, probably won't. I know with the 2200, all leveled out real good at midpoint on the trailer, and that was towing with the Sable.........I know, dummy that is not for hauling..........but it at the time was all I had.

I think it is back to the dealer for a tandem trailer, with brakes. The guy I bought the trailer from is really a great guy to deal with, just wish he sold ORANGE. I am sure I can get a great deal on trade.

I was not sure on that, thanks. I had someone mention the fact that I had a single axle, and the freeway.........anyone know of laws against this in Indiana? I have not moved it yet, but with the work I have planned the 50 hour service is not far off.

I don't have the equalizer hitch, but what I have is rated at 5300 pounds, 3500 tongue weight I think.........wife has the truck so can't check, but it is a frame hitch.

White knuckles, that is what I had towing the 2200 with the Sable, I really did not like doing it at all.

thanks Bird

I have the flat connection for the flashers and the lights, with one extra wire not used on this trailer. Not sure on the controller, where would I look? I understand Ford had the ST in a trailer package also, extra tranny cooler etc. This one does not have that, as far as I can tell. Any hints on how to tell besides the cooler at the radiator?
