I had two horses in box stalls right next to each other. One horse would wait until she got outside to relieve herself and the other would wait until she was in the stall before she went.

That horse would be outside all day and as soon as she got in her stall she would pee. She did this from day one, don't ask me why.

Good luck!

Randy

Not too encouraging :(

Are you using mats to keep the mess to a minimum? Do you still put shavings in during the day? Our horses are allowed into the stall at will during the day, but with the mats down & no shavings, most of the urine just runs out.

We've had horses for over 10 years, each had their own habits. We've never tried 'stall training' any of them, and I have a hard time believing it's possible, with the usual caveat that almost everything is possible with enough time and money. :)

Our horses usually go right before feeding time. Perhaps you can see if yours is on a regular schedule? If so maybe see if it can be encouraged by a treat, carrots, graining? Perhaps putting fresh hay in the stall will encourage it to eat and not dump in there.

Usually I can get ours to go by getting their grain buckets ready, they go off in a corner of the paddocks before venturing into the "feeding" zone.

What your seeking is possible, just work on your part.

The horse is interpreting your keeping the stall mucked into "this is where he wants me to go". Let the stall go and instead keep his favorite go spot in the pasture cleaned up for a few days.

I hate to tell you but you are SOL... horses like to go in basically the same are most of the time. Clean or not.. that's where it's going to land....

My fiancee and I have two horses, a retired national show horse Half arab, half saddle breed named Dreamer, and a very handsome full of himself 2 year old pony. Dreamer won't use the facilities outside. You can see her get anxious when she is outside for too long. Put her in the stall and she goes. Habit I guess. If you use shavings try placing some outside and see what they do.

Maybe i should have added that this is mostly a winter time problem and my wife would rather see me freeze to death than the horse..
Closing the stall is not an option in the winter.

Ah, I got some news for you. The horse is not going to freeze in a Md. winter. When I had my horse in upstate NY, she was outside always. There was a 3 sided lean-to for her to get in, but the only time she ever used it was in a downpour with high winds. I even found her one day under the barn eaves with about 1/4" of ice on her back. The barn was just warm enough to melt snow off the roof, but the air was cold enough to freeze it on her back. I bet she thought it was going to keep me from riding her! Well, I put on a bareback pad, and rode until the ice melted, dryed her off and finished riding.

I live in Western Md.( 3,000 ft.) It is NOT the Baltimore area. We had 22 days in a row last year that it did not get above 25deg. In the daytime !! ANd the wind constantly howls ( not blows ) howls acrossed the front of my house and my horse pasture. Not uncommon to go out on the few nice winter days we have and see deer froze to death. I know she won't freeze to death though. But the wife would rather see me froze than her horse. ;)
