Yanmar 1500
For some reason my posts don't seem to be showing up. At great risk of repeating myself for the third time (I'll make it short), what kind of fluid goes into a Yanmar 1500 transmission? I got some 80, 90 gear oil at the automotive store but I'm afraid to put it in. Also how do you know how much it takes? There is no dipstick and no aparent markings on the case anywhere.

You don't want to use gear oil. The tranny uses hydraulic fliud. There should be a dipstick between your shift lever and the seat on top of the tranny. It has a black rubber top on it. At least mine does. If you can't find it let me know and I'll snap a picture of mine to show you where it is.

Use Universal hydraulic/transmission fluid such as JD303. It is designed to give gears & bearings the correct lubrication.

I agree with Lens12, JD303 spec tractor hydraulic transmission fluid is correct. On the 20 series and all F series and newer Yanmars, use JD20A spec, although most Universal HY-Trans fluids I have looked at meet both specs. 90wt would be a real problem to the hydraulic pump.
