Could be condensation or water in oil, i've had it happen to big machines.
Change oil and filter.

The thing that irks me is that I live in a cold climate and they have to KNOW that the tractor will see winter use here but they ship it with standard hydro oil and filter.

They also failed to mention this little piece of information to me, the first timer. I have to think that they just want me to learn it for myself so that they get the $200 it cost for the new oil and filter. If they shipped with the proper gear, they'd get less money out of my pocket than when I destroy the filter and lose all my oil onto the floor.

Oh well, it's fixed.

Alan and John:

Bet I am the only one who actually built a wood fire under a 1930's hand crank John Deere B. South Georgia winters weren't too cold in the 1950's, but at 32 deg F the straight 50 weight oil was so thick that you could barely turn the flywheel even with the compression release cocks open. But a few slabs from the family sawmill burning under the engine for half hour or so warmed it up good. Course it made for a nasty engine, but that didn't matter in those days.

I think -23 Celcius or -16 Fahrenheit is starting to get kind of cold for a regular UTF. What you could try is a winter UTF which is a lower viscosity at start up. John Deere makes Low Viscosity HyGard or TRC's low temp UTF, I'm sure there are some others out there as well if you check around. If your going to work alot in the cold I would use the winter UTF and use the winter filter.

Farmerford,

Ha! You take the cake with that one. A little too warm for my tastes....

Speaking of getting oil up. Ran out of floor dry and went to the cold storage part of the shop and swept up some of the good "clean dry dirt" from the dirt floor. Works just as well as anything else. Then again, my standards are pretty low.
