Trans/Hydraulic Oil vs. Gear Oil?

remember.. utf is not a straight hyd oil.. it's actually formulated to work in trannies, hyds, power steering, and final drives.. wet clutches.. wet brakes.. etc.

if you want to get off the beaton path.. at work we have tons of cat equipment that use 30w or 40w engine oil in the trannies... ( torque converter )

and thus the name UTF or universal tractor fluid, its universal. I think 80W90 and higher fluids are being used less and less. While my Kubotas and can use 80W90 in the front axle, they came filled with UTF.

yep.. lotsa common sump systems using utf vs multi sump systems with gear oil in some and hyds in others..

we have a bros milling machine ( soil stabilizer ).. has big chain boxes on the side.. manual actually specs 50w engine oil in em

My Harley Landscape rake takes 180W in the chain box.

The relatively slow moving gears of a tractor could probably be lubed with bear grease and last quite awhile.

I've got a mower that says you can use anything from 75w up to 140w or a pourable grease in the 00# range..

Really, its quite standard today. Every Kubota I have ever purchased uses hydraulic fluid in the front axle and of course, the transmission/hydraulic pump for external hydraulics. Even my old IH 454D used hydraulic fluid exclusively. Don't all manual transmissions use a light weight oil instead of "gear oil". I think your mistaken.

My tractor uses 80W90 Gear Oil in both the transmission and the front axle. It has a separate reservoir for the hydraulics which uses AW32.
